Product Description

Product Description

Phenomenally intense thriller in which two best friends become deadliest enemies in a fight to the death. Highly charged, moving, action-packed and suspenseful.

The story follows two soldiers, Fife and O’Keefe, both Catholics from tough backgrounds, one from Glasgow, the other from Belfast. We first meet them on an SAS raid in the Falklands, where O’Keefe saves Fife’s life against the order of their cowardly officer Baines-Hickey.

In an explosive and very moving tale, too complex for a short synopsis, passion, tragedy and circumstance conspire to take O’Keefe on to the side of the IRA. He becomes a sniper, hated, revered and feared throughout his homeland. Fife, meanwhile, dismissed from the army for being O’Keefe’s friend, soon has a terrible reason for hating his former friend.

When both sides of the Irish conflict begin to search for a way to stop the fighting, both Fife and O’Keefe are embarrassments. In a superb climax, the one is set to hunt the other, while the SAS pursue them both, directed by the sleek politician Baines-Hickey.

A riveting read with great technical accuracy and powerful human characters.

From the Back Cover

When The Best Of Friends Become The Deadliest Of Enemies.

Duggie Fife and Paddy O'Keefe. Two sides of the same coin. Both soldiers, both brought up on the meanest streets, one in Glasgow, one in Belfast.

They are bound together by more than friendship when Fife saves O'Keefe's life on a behind-the-lines operation in the Falklands War.

But later, serving in Northern Ireland, tragic fate will separate them onto different sides, and then it can only be a fight to the death.

A story of hunter and hunted, 'The Drumbeat Of Jimmy Sands' is one of the most relentlessly powerful and suspenseful novels of this or any other year.

I initially bought this book to kill a few hours in Manchester while waiting for the European Cup final to start. I had to drag myself to the TV. When O'Keefe saves Fife's life in the Falklands, it appears that nothing could separate them. Murray Davies does a fantastic job with a plot that exposes how human emotions and brutal twists of fate can do just that. Being interested in Northern Ireland, I might be biased, but parents, friends & even my girlfriend took a firm back seat over the days I was reading this book. I could honestly recommend it to anybody, even if they aren't interested in the Ulster situation - the fast pace alone of this thriller is sure to appeal to any fan of the genre. 'Compelling' is an over - used cliche in literature, however I can think of no other word to do justice to this book. Buy it!

I picked this up at the airport on the off chance. My expectations were not high - how wrong could I be.An intricate plot line ,superior characterisation (particularly the IRA chief)and superb action scenes led to a sleepness night for all the right reasons - I can think of no higher praise.

Another cracker from this under-exposed author! My follow up to Dogs In The Streets, and its every bit as compulsive.
Story revolves around two squaddies, who go their different ways.
Not for the faint-hearted, this is a blood and guts account of the people affected within the Province during the troubles.
Great read. Now, on to another Davies novel.....
