Blakey was one of the first jazz musicians to study African drumming, visit the continent, and explore the cultures there. The first three songs are based on that, with Sacrifice being all percussion and vocals sung in (I believe) Swahili. In 1956!
Cubano Chant is more conventional jazz, and this song was revived by Steely Dan in their 2003 tour as the opening number for their live shows. The rest of the album is solid, inspired straight ahead jazz. This is an outstanding album, and a must-have for students of drumming and percussion
