Muso workouts aren't always the most accessible things for the non-initiated, especially when they aim to showcase the skills of a dozen virtuoso drummers and percussionists. If you believe that a drummer's job is merely to keep the beat then you'll probably find much of this rhythmic experimentation fairly incomprehensible. But if you're a drummer yourself - or someone who enjoys the spectacle of great musicians stretching their muscles - this instrumental compilation from Modern Drummer magazine is well worth investigation.

Opening with the spidery, open-ended electronica of Terry Bozzio's A Glimpse Into a Deeply Disturbed Mind, the collection pitches back in time to classic jazz-rock with Bill Bruford's Beelzebub, a version of which first saw the light of day on his 1977 solo album Feels Good To Me. Ex-Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworth collaborator Chad Wackerman's working in much the same kind of area with his muscular, menacing The Spell, whilst West coast sessioneer Josh Freese brings his alt-rock background to bear on the urgent, QOTSA-influenced Lagerborg and Galactic's Stanton Moore gets funky with the New Orleans inflected Sprung Monkey.

But maybe the CD's most interesting moment comes on Tim Alexander and Brain's Zappa homage Shut Up And Play Yer Drums, with the Primus percussionists putting together a sinister, slow-burning build into musical chaos which recalls everything from King Crimson to the Banshees.

My partner is a semi-pro drummer and he loved this album. He has recommended it to friends. Will look at other CD's in series. Happy with packing and delivery.

Awesome Drumming CD 20 Jan. 2005
By C. Saylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It took me a while to pick this one up, but I'm glad I did. All of the tracks are worthy to be on this collection. There is a diverse grouping of drummers so the listener won't be dissapointed. Vets like Steve Smith, Simon Phillips, Rod Morganstein, Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio all shine. Other drummers like Stanton Moore, Chad Wackerman, Josh Freese, etc. all have contributed great tracks as well. This is a great compilation, and I look forward to the next.
No Brainer 14 Mar. 2013

I 100% agree with one of the previous reviewers. This CD is worth it for the wealth of talent involved in the 1st 9 tracks but further down the list if you want to test out you stereo system get it for the 1 track containing Tim Alexander and Brain. Track 10. Holy Cow Batman!!!! That tracks just lifts the roof!!!!!! I have never listened to Primus although I have heard of the band. I had no idea who these two guys are so had to 'google' them. The track just builds and swirls and builds again. There is a throbbing bass tone underpinning the track that just groans away while the two just go at it hammer and tongs.

Buy this CD for this mighty track alone and get the rest of the brilliant players for free :-)

Regards Cazzesman

From a drummers point of view... 21 Jan. 2004
By John Bennett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I found this on a fluke! I own a CD called burning for Buddy, which has a lot of these same players. The only exception is they are playing Buddy Rich charts with his orchestra. This disc contains original songs by these drummers with there own band. I'm 51 and grew up basically with Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich; great drummers in thier own right. But, I must say these drummers will and do blow Rich and Krupa away. A must for any drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
