5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - user friendly and idiot-proof! 25 May 2012
This is probably one of the best of the Koala books "Progressive" drum books available - I've had drum lessons in the past (about twenty years ago, owned a Sonor drum kit, etc) and this book is the best catch up service going.

It's also excellent for beginners. Right from the start, this book gets you playing proper 4/4 drum beats, from shuffles to disco beats (I remember music before Metallica came along so I don't mind that "pea soup, pea soup" cheesy disco drum beat at all) to 12/8 grooves and basic Jazz rhythms. There's even a chapter on basic rhythm section grooves with notation for yourself on drums, a pal on bass guitar and a mate on electric guitar to rehearse together; this book has got it all!

However, this book isn't going to teach you how to fly around the drum kit like Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker or John Bonham; that's a whole different book altogether but you do learn some decent fills and there are a few chapters on rudiments such as Paradiddles and how to apply them to playing round the kit but if you practise what's on offer in this book often enough, you'll be able to sound pretty flash fairly quickly but...

....remember! Your job as the drummer is to lay a solid foundation for the rest of the band and being a "busy" drummer who's always competing with the lead guitarist or the singer for attention probably means you're not doing your job right. Check out the drummers in AC/DC, for example - no showboating with these guys, for them, the song is king (and Angus's bottom kicking guitar solos) so, don't worry about not being able to audition for a band like Rush or Dream Theater once you've finished this book, keeping a solid beat is all that matters and this book will give the tools to do just that.
