Review

'Margaret Leroy's eerily lovely novel The Drowning Girl is one of those rare books you'll sit with till your bones ache. The mystery of why 4-year-old Sylvie longs to return to a house she has never seen, a family she cannot have known, takes this peculiar child, her anxious single mother, and a romantically scruffy psychologist onto the windswept beaches of a tiny coastal Irish village a setting as enchantingly perilous as childhood itself.' --Oprah Magazine

'This is a really special book. Sylvie s vulnerability is so powerfully drawn, so flesh-and-blood real, that you want to reach into the pages and protect her yourself.' --Louise Candlish, bestselling author of Since I Don't Have You

'This is a really enjoyable book and perfect holiday reading.' --Adele Geras, bestselling author of A Hidden Life

Would you go back? 3 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This is the story of a little girl, Sylvie, who has an unusual phobia of water. Looked after by her single-parent mother the child becomes subjected to steryotypes by various people. One day, a photo in a magazine, leads her mother to think that perhaps she is not remembering something that happened to her, but something that happened to her in a previous life.

This is a gripping read which leaves you guessing right untill the end. Great for any readers of modern-alternative kind of stories. A great book for a gift, as it one that isn't so widely known of.

This story affected me from the beginning with a wistful longing for it not to become a silly tale. And it doesn't, just. A clever idea for a modern fable of possession and dark secrets. The painful discomfort of her other worldly little daughter Sylvie not being 'normal' drives Grace to extraordinary lengths in an effort to help her resolve her troubles. Clues begin to arrive in quick succession and the pace becomes quite hectic. Ireland is beautifully evoked and the extra characters are well drawn. An absorbing and thoughtful mystery with a satisfying resolution.

I found this to be a fascinating read, well plotted and beautifully written, with the intriguing subject of reincarnation at its centre. I found Grace's plight both sad and realistic, life was a struggle with a sometimes difficult child who was 'let go' from nursery so that Grace had to give up her job, and the lengths she had to go to in which to discover Sylvie's truth.
A lovely book, easy to read and would definitely recommend.

The description sounded like a great concept for a book, however, the writer just doesn't manage to pull it off.
