Synopsis

Drop the Dead Donkey was a landmark satirical sitcom, set in the offices of "Globelink News", a fictional TV news company in the style of CNN or ITN. Set in the era of media deregulation, the series took an over-the-top look at the conflict between old-school news journalists and media owners more concerned with ratings and profits than the truth. Each episode was recorded close to transmission, allowing script changes to incorporate breaking news and up-to-the-minute political satire. The last scene - a voiceover for the end credits - was filmed either the day before or even on the day of broadcast to catch the issues of the day. First aired in 1990, Drop the Dead Donkey was an innovative comedy that launched the careers of several successful comic actors.

Remember... 23 July 2005

...Henry's accident involving Sally's dog, Dido? How about Sally getting dunked in a gunk tank on children's TV? And, of course this is the season when Sally brings her dead mothers ashes into work with her, then finding religion later.
Also this season; Gay rights protesters run amok in the studio, just before the show goes live on air. Poor George's marriage hits the rocks. Gus considers job cuts. Who will be the unlucky ones? Dave has to deliver a video tape to Sir Royston, but it is stolen.

The dead donkey is still being dropped... this second series seems a lot more adventurous than the first, and we meet more one-off characters, such as the hilarious drunk minister Nicholas Waugh, George's delinquent daughter Deborah (a running gag), a pair of Russian journalists out to woo Alex, and a televangelist who does a little unorthodox preaching in Sally's direction. The best episode has to be Drunk Minister, for sheer nerve, chaos and the best punchline in the show's whole eight years (sorry, you'll just have to buy the DVD to find out what it is!).

This is also the first appearance of the (in)appropriately named Joy - classic line:

Gus: "Are you going anywhere near the kettle, Joy?"
Joy: "If you want a cup of coffee, Gus, why don't you just ask?"
Gus: "Well, then, can I have a cup of coffee?"
Joy: "No..."

(Well, it works better on the screen...)

The series itself is much much funnier than the first; however the bonus features are still unbelievably tedious, wading through a lot of smug actors and writers talking about how bad the Tories were, eight years after they left office. Change the record for series 3, guys!

As I reviewed about the first series of this show, these days I enjoy the character comedy more than the topical comedy. I can't recall the issues of the day from nearly 20 years ago, even with a snapshot of that week's news events- but the characters are as funny as ever and the second series ups the ante with the speed and smoothness of delivery and comic timing.

The second series was more confident and has more laughs than series one. It's still the early days of the show however and has Alex in charge of the office, with Helen not part of the team until later series, so the best cast dynamics were yet to come.
