Format: Audio CD
It's great to have these three EP releases together on one album.
For my money Nico Muhly is one of the most talented young composers
at work in the listening world today. The title 'Drones', although
to some degree accurate, given his sustained use of long-breathed
string passages as a foundation for the piano parts which float
above and interact with them, does not quite do this complex and
captivating music justice. The end results are positively enchanting.

The block-like solidity of the piano parts creates a palpable sense
of nervous tension in inventions such as 'Part I' of the first five-
part work, in wonderful contrast to the haunting quasi-Medieval
theme of 'Part V'. There is simple beauty too in the fragile miniature
of 'Part III Material With No Tricks' in the second group of pieces
and aching melancholy when a violin takes the lead against Mr Muhly's
shimmering keyboard ostinato on 'Part I Material in Eb' in the third.

Yet another captivating release from an artist of true musical vision.

(Do listen to his 2011 recording 'Seeing Is Believing' while you're at it).

Highly Recommended.

Exciting and Beautiful Chamber Works 1 Jan. 2015
By Danny - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Nico Muhly is one of the shining stars of our time, and as a student of composition I like to keep my ear to the ground when someone fresh and exciting like Muhly produces new works.

Originally produced in several installments, Drones are a series of pieces that explore music written around and utilizing the drone. He writes for drones to be played in the piano, viola and violin, and each piece explores the various ways the musical roles can be explored.

Drones is a fascinating exploration of the juxtaposition of static musical formations and active ones, and Muhly does so with interesting and colorful results.

Some tracks are more contemplative and melodious like Part I Material in D which brings to mind the works of Arvo Paart, while some are extremely active such as Part V. All the tracks explore Muhly's penchant for short melodies and beautiful if not mysterious harmonies.

While you won't be entirely satisfied if your conception of drones is something you might listen to as you fall asleep or practice yoga, Muhly's album is a smart, refreshing and insightful compositional exploration of drones as a musical device.

What you'll find on Drones is an exhilarating work with masterful performances that express and explore a panoply of emotions and moods, while cultivating an ingenious musical conversation in a chamber setting.

As "Droning" goes, this drones 28 Feb. 2013
By Alexandra de la Vega - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I am a dedicated fan of Muhly's from the moment I heard him at WDH in LA. He is an articulate composer, mindful, as a writer he leaves no loose ends on top of excellence in intelligent use of textures and color in his work. But this album did get on my nerves after a few pieces, not something you want to listen to in rush-hour traffic...
