About the Artist

Big Country are a BIG band. Still hero worshipped by fans today and an ever present on front covers of NME, Melody Maker & Smash Hits & always on TV and radio in the 80s. Recently Shane MacGowan said . Big Country was a big influence on The Pogues when we started out; their first album is a classic. I loved Stuart Adamson s bagpipe guitar sound. Those guys were brilliant together and brilliant apart." And at a recent Manic Street Preachers concert at the Glasgow SECC singer/guitarist, James Dean Bradfield commented that Stuart was an inspiration. Its also well documented that Stuart Adamson inspired The Edge of U2, which he publicly stated in his eulogy for Stuart when he sadly passed away in 2001. Since then U2/Green Day covered a song from Stuarts previous band The Skids - The Saints are Coming which was included on their massive U218 album of 2007. Many a journalist when originally released in 1999 described Driving to Damascus as their best since the debut album, 'The Crossing' (which sold over 2 million). Fragile Thing (feat: Eddie Reader) was a radio hit (14 weeks Radio 2 playlist). Two songs on the album were co-written by Kinks legend Ray Davies. This re-release has a second disc. Disc one, the original album and disc two contains bonus tracks taken from the American version of this release 'John Waynes Dream' and a web only album recorded live as a promotional cd at the time with a limited amount sold to fans via the band website. These tracks include two Top Ten hits 'Chance' & 'Look Away'. A must for all Big Country completists and for those new seeing them for the first times at the six major UK festivals the new line up are performing at this year. A new line up has formed with, from the original band Tony Butler, Mark Brzezicki, Bruce Watson and guests Mike Peters (of The Alarm) and Bruce's son Jamie Watson. Classic Rock editor Scott Rowley gave it a big thumbs up and a six pager in March's edition. Scottish reviews in the likes of News of the World have been astounding. The band play six major festivals this summer dates follow

a jewel in the crown 19 Nov 2011
This is a great Album.A different sound from the early days certainly but,as ever, uplifting, inspiring, from the heart and always with passion.Stuart Adamson was a 'one-off'.I know these songs well but they still move me; from the hairs on the back of my neck...to tears but never those of sadness. This last studio album may not have sold well but that's a travesty. This album stands proud among Big Country's output. It hasn't dated, the messages are timeless but it was never about fashion though...was it? Time will tell

Big Country's swan song as a band is also one of their finest-deluxe edition includes songs from 2002 reissue as well live EP 17 Sep 2011
By WTDK - Published on Amazon.com
The sad suicide of Stuart Adamson in 2001 can't detract from the extensive and powerful legacy of the band he founded--Big Country was Adamson's second signed band and the first to break through to a large audience. Although often seen as a one-hit wonder by some folks, Big Country's legacy is more important much more extensive than "In A Big Country" and the big MTV video that played nonstop in the early 80's.

"Driving to Damcascus" the band's last full length original album of material is also one of the band's finest in a consistently strong career that got lost in the hype of their first album. This deluxe edition sounds pretty good for a remaster AND it has a second disc including the songs from the retitled album ("John Wayne's Dream")that bassist Tony Butler reworked for the 2002 reissue of the album.

Also included here is the EP of live tracks the band made as a promotional tool featuring tracks from this album as well as some concert favorites.

This is a terrific album filled with strong material from a band that had rediscovered their fire. Although not as ground breaking as their debut, the material is strong and includes two songs co-written with Kink Ray Davies.

Highly recommended.
