Needs a little work 1 Oct 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun:
I purchased "Driving Simulator 2011" to orient myself to the experience of driving before committing myself to getting a driver's licence. Having had experience on other simulator games such as "Microsoft Flight Simulator 98" and "Trainz Railroad Simulator", I knew the game's depiction of driving wouldn't be quite true to life.

That was certainly the case with this game.

To begin with, the creators of the game created a driving experience exclusively for Europeans, in the sense that you can only drive on the right-hand side of the road. Driving on the left-hand side is considered a traffic offence on the game and so UK drivers are marked down for it. Curiously, you are also marked down for not using indicators or stopping at Stop signs when you DO obey those rules.

Equally puzzling was the behaviour of other traffic. When you are turning a corner, you are hit by oncoming traffic that refuses to stop for anybody or anything, sometimes even when the traffic lights are in your favour. In other cases, especially on the motorway, you are hit frequently by drivers who refuse to slow down for you or think that you are in their way.

I think, if this game had had a little more thought, it could have been very successful. To its merit, the graphics are excellent and there is none of the jumping around that accompanies cheaper simulator games. Unfortunately, as a driving experience, it is very poor, and it will take me a long time before I can face getting behind the driving seat after this.

Hmmm... Not the Best 2 July 2011
Fun:
Maybe it's the fact that I have been playing too many expertly crafted games from a studio that I'll not name, but this game felt a bit, how do I put it, Rushed. The grahics felt too general, by that I mean there was not enough detail, and the textures had a plastic like look to them, with that nasty shiny coating badly constructed bump mapping gives you. Another thing, beware of the interface, while the skidmark style buttons are novel for the first 0.0025 milliseconds, it falls apart rather quickly, as the in-game mouse is laggy and finiky, and the buttons are as small as a needle point, so it can be a right pain getting into the game, not to mention the cost of bald patch remedies in the years to come! Also, the controls were WAY too sensitive, it felt you were driving a mongoose kitted out with Nitrous Oxide! A click of the left keyboard button, and you'd be veering into the left barrier! It felt like a finger war just keeping inside the lane! Also, you don't get to drive all of the cars advertised on the front cover in free roam right away, you have to complete bemusingly hard career modes to get them. Critisims apart, it has a lot of variety with vehicles, and it's a fun way to waste half an hour, if you can put up with the graphics issues. Unfortuanetly, niche simulators have got a bad name due to grizzly graphics and confusing controls, and sadly this doesn't break the steriotype. Overall, if your in the niche market, it's a fun distraction, but if you the kind of person who likes a good game of, say, Fear 3, this one definately won't be for you. With a little more effort on the texture front, and some more legwork in the interface department, this would be an exellent game, but, for the reasons above, this just scores a 3 star all round for me.

Fun:
My son enjoys this (6 years old) Personally I dont like it, its riddled with bugs. Stop at the traffic stop sign then drive on and there is a penalty for not stoping. Use your indicators go round a corner and get a penalty for not using indicators.

This is a BETA version sold as a finshed version (My personal opinion only). It has lots of potential if the developer really put the time into sorting the problems. The car handling is unrealistic and there is no way to adjust sensitivity settings. Graphically its very very basic. Oh and there is no support or community.

If you want a driving simulator then you would be better buying GTA
