Product Description

Jockey Freddie Croft thought he'd left the perils behind him when he retired from the jump game. These days he was happy to transport horses from their stables to the races. Until one of his drivers picked up an unlicensed passenger. And brought him back dead. The corpse on the doorstep was Freddie's unwelcome introduction to the shadowy, big money conspiracy which muscled into his business and started to threaten his life. But Freddie was a fighter, and winning was in his blood; First identify the danger. Then beat them out of sight.

By H. Beentje TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
(one in a series of Dick Francis reviews in which I try and separate all those rather similar titles, and in which I try not to give away plotlines)

Driving Force, first published 1992

The plot: Freddie Croft used to be a jockey; now he runs a successful horse transport business. When one of his transporters picks up a hitch-hiker who dies on board, it seems rather shocking as well as a bit tiresome, but not portentous. Then murder ensues... with vital clues hidden in mysterious rhyming slang!

My opinion: a slow starter, and pretty slow in some later stages, too; with a large cast of characters and a convoluted plot with what seems (at times) a bit too much detail. However, this *is* a Dick Francis, and therefore a cracking read, slow or not. Very light on the romantic side, which is a pity, because that usually speeds the story along with this writer; and a it heavy on the philosophical side, at times. Never mind, it's Dick Francis: always a good read.

Francis, once again provides an excellent thriller in this book, Driving Force. The work centres around the life of retired steeplechase jockey, Freddie Croft and his business of transporting racehorses. The story and its events are not shy to begin unfolding from page one and there is are a number of twists and turns to the tale, many of which surprise and I didn't see coming!
There were many characters in this book but all play a significant part somewhere in the story.

All in all, a very good read. I've read about 8 of Francis' books now. This one wasn't the best, that one was Proof, but this is well up in the top 5 so far. Next stop, Trial Run.

Great read 13 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a great read Dick Francis at his best although not taking place on a race course but to do with the transportation of horses and the deceit of a bad trainer. It held my attention until the end as it was not obvious who was doing what and why.
