THE ART OF DRIVING & FIRING A STEAM ENGINE THE BLACK ART OF FIRING Our cameras follow Clive Groome, one of the most experienced enginemen in the country, as he demonstrates how to fire four very different steam locomotives from lighting up in the morning and oiling the machine right through to the disposal of the engine at night. THE ART OF DRIVING Every aspect of driving a steam locomotive is covered in this practical DVD. From observing and obeying signals to understanding the dangers of letting speed run away with you, Clive Groome s easy manor and vast experience makes this definitive footplate guide a must-watch for anyone interested in steam. DRIVING & FIRING THE BIG FOUR Engineman Clive Groome worked on all the main express locomotives back in the glory days of steam. In this DVD, Clive studies the different engines made by the Big Four railway companies. Having fired the Kings and Castles, Clive compares the Western engines with the machines of the LNER. He also examines the Stanier Pacifics and boards the modern Southern Bulleid express engines. KING FOR A SUMMER This is the inside story of 6024 King Edward I s storming performances at the head of the Torbay Express service to Kingswear during the summer of 2008. The TV crew rode with 6024 for several weeks and the resulting documentary provides an exquisite insight into how the King reigned supreme on one of the most stunning railway routes in Britain!

I bought this for my aging older brother who is one of the last 'firemen' from the age of steam in Victoria (Australia)
He absolutely loves the technical aspect of it all and breaks into a simultaneous commentary, beside that emanating from the DVD itself, for any and all who might be watching and listening, even though the equipment he 'fired' was more American than British and therefore is quite different.
For myself --------I am absolutely enchanted at the glimpses of English (British --- whatever)trackside infrastructure, landscapes, villages, towns and farms, stations and workshops etc etc that the trains pass through. The cinematography is superb while the narration and commentary is so, so understated yet informative.
An absolutely delightful set. I am sure it will be viewed over and over again.

I just finished watching this DVD set and I highly recommend it.

The first 3 DVDs feature Clive Groome, sometimes accompanied on the footplate by his nice although a bit shy daughters, who explains the various aspects of firing and driving various steam locomotives.
Beware that the DVDs are NOT video tutorials on how to fire and drive. I suppose you'd need many more DVDs for that. Instead, they give a nice overview of the many things you have to deal with and pay attention to as a fireman and a driver of a steam locomotive. Mr. Groome is a very nice and likeable character with supreme knowledge of the subject. Although the different DVDs nominally cover different topics, these often blend together because apparently everything is related to everything else on a steam locomotive.

The last DVD is a story of the 6024 King Edward I working as a passenger train during one summer season. The documentary is very well made, as it not only follows the story of the train but also provides additional info about actually driving it and so it fits nicely with the other 3 DVDs. One thing I'd like to point out about this DVD is the camera work which is really creative with many unusual and unique shots. My most favourite one is probably the cameraman walking underneath the locomotive revealing its many mechanical parts which normally remain hidden.

I'm very pleased with this DVD collection, it is packed with information, contains many lovely shots accompanied by fitting and professional narrative. Although a lot of the action takes place on the footplate, the camera is surprisingly steady (unlike many amateur YouTube videos) which only adds to the very nice experience.

Four very well produced DVDs. The technical quality is superb and Clive Groome's style of presentation makes him a firm friend by the end of the three DVDs he appears in. I found his comparisons between the various Big Four loco to be very interesting and, more importantly, spoken of from personal experience.
The fourth DVD give an insight to the very hard work that goes on behind the scenes of running Steam Specials. Excellent quality and should be viewed, if possible, when the neighbours are out and at full volume on a big screen.
Be prepared for shivers and goosebumps, it's that good.

Superb!
Bought this for my 88 year old Dad for Christmas, he loves steam trains and has talked about little else since her started watching the DVD's.
If you want to know about how to fire & drive a steam train then you won't go wrong with this set.

A bargain ! you can't put a price on memories, I was fireman in the early Sixtties until Dr Beeching started swinging His axe.
These DVD's brought it all back, they where the happiest Years of My working life even if the hours were lousy.
Think of any hour of the day or week and you could either be booking on off, and they even used to run extra trains on Bank Holidays and Christmas Day.
But I would not have missed it for the world !

The recipient seems very well pleased but I haven't watched the DVD's myself. Not my thing! Good value, I'd say.

four great dvds, if you dont know anything about driving and firing then you need to have this, it covers the basics..great footplate work...clive groome is a great teacher if you listen to him he will teach you a lot, and he is a mine of information on locomotives, its as much as you could cram in to set of dvds, and by the end of this you will feel as if you know him...well worth buying ..wouldnt part with this now.
