Product Description

Book Description

Some say golf is about life...
Sometimes, it can be the way back to life!

When ex-headmaster David Crowley is appointed Secretary of Branfield Park, an exclusive but almost bankrupt golf club, he comes up against Brigadier Henry Tufnell who is determined to defend it against any change. Bereaved, celibate and lonely, David no longer plays golf, believing that, by playing, he neglected his dying wife.

Given a six-month deadline by the bank to reverse the Club’s decline, David sets out to attract more members and visitors. As he and the Brigadier do battle, each man driven by his own vision of the game and each convinced that only he can save the Club, David’s own life is reawakened.

Peppered with golfing action and metaphor, Driver is a human story, spiced with humour, violence, intrigue and romance that will entertain golfers and non-golfers alike.

From the Author

Over many years on the golf course, I've heard seen and heard many amusing and intriguing things. I wanted to write a book which would interest and entertain golfers but not just golfers. It is often said that golf is about life, so a novel about golf is bound to be a story about life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Driver, 13 Oct 2002
By
Peter Mountford (Jersey, Channel Islands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Driver: A Golf Novel (Paperback)
As I was travelling home to the Channel Islands, I read a novel which would make a perfect Christmas present for the multitude of golf loving husbands/wives! The author relates a fascinating story behind the scenes of a local golf club. I was initially concerned that the book would delve into the technicalities of golf, however I was pleased to discover that golf was simply the background to a good story in which the author cleverly develops his characters to great effect. A very good read!

I look forward to the author's next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have you brought your driver?, 8 Oct 2002
By
Christopher Martin (St Andrews, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Driver: A Golf Novel (Paperback)
An unputdownable rip-roaring cracker of a debut from Tim Southgate. Driver is the story of one man's quest to bring meaning to existence in the autumn of his life. It has everything: romance, machiavellian intrigue and a failing golf course. But can David turn both his life and Branfield Park golf course around?

Unmissable.

A great book for golfers everywhere - literally could not put it down. Full of humour, excellent identification of characters and very informative.

This was bought as a gift for me and would make a safe bet as a gift to any golfer
