I'll update this review as I watch each film, could take a while.
PICK UP (3 stars) sees two girls hitch a ride with some dude who's delivering a mobile home, they get stuck in the swamp, one of the girls and the dude have a nude-fest while the other (Gini Eastwood, all smouldering eyes and tan lined body)performs some kind of naked self sacrifice while having a spiritual/mental breakdown.
It's your usual drive-in mix of weed/nudity/free love/spirituality and finding yourself, man, all this with a sting in the tail at the climax.
It's very watchable although flashbacks ruin the flow and there's a very freaky deaky clown which, as far as I could seee bore no resemblance to the rest of the film.
BEST FRIENDS (2 stars) sees two dudes (one's a jerk and the other's on his way to being one) and their girlfriends delivering a mobile home (must've been big in the 70s) to San Francisco and, as the back cover says, love backfires and tragedy follows.
It's your typical bottom of the bill drive-in film, west coast country rock soundtrack, dashes of nudity, a motorcycle nod to 'Easy Rider' and the whole Kerouac ethos of 'let's hit the road, man'.
It chugs along without really getting out of first gear and although it has a pretty good last 20 minutes, it's not really worth sitting through the first hour to get there.
THE SISTER IN LAW (3 stars) starts off like some femme fatale film with Anne Saxon as Joanna who doesn't need to be asked twice to strip down to her birthday suit but it's really about the two brothers in the film after one comes back from 18 months on the road.
Deceit, morality, honesty and infidelity all crop as the other brother smuggles parcels from Canada for a local gangster and all in all it's a pretty good film with the usual drive-in dose of nudity (the lithe Anne Saxon and the pouty Meredith Baer), violence, dodgy barnets and a theme tune sung by John Savage (The Deer Hunter) which shows he's equally adept at singing as he is acting.
CINDY & DONNA (3 stars) sees 2 teenage sisters (a good time girl and a virgin) with a father with a wandering eye and a booze hound mum with an accent like Joan Rivers via Barbara Windsor. It's a very 60s film about pot, booze and sex with words like 'groovy', 'trippy' amd 'dig' cropping up here and there, man. It's quite an appealing film and I really dug the groovy nudity on show as both sisters nude up, one gets high and makes out with her best friend and there's an astoundingly hot stripper who has boobs so perky they could hypnotize a blind man.
Overall, it's pretty good, has a great soundtrack and a crash bang wallop of an ending.
THE STEPMOTHER (2 stars) I found to be somewhat of a drag, it's about a jealous husband who kills a guy he thinks his wife is sleeping with and the cop hassling him once he knows this. It's just dull really, I'd recommend you leave this until last or maybe even not bother with it at all.
