Book Description

18 Oct 2012

Cocktails are back in a big way - but no more '2 for 1' Tequila Sunrises. Today's cocktails are a sensory experience, concocted by experts on taste and aroma - and none is more expert than Tony Conigliaro, expert alchemist and award-winning barman.

Drinks is a stunning contemporary cocktail guide, which nods to the history of the cocktail and updates 50 classic cocktail recipes in astonishing and original ways. Tony's spins on the classics include Vintage Manhattan (using aged bourbon), new classics of his own invention (the Twinkle, now on cocktail menus the world over), drinks based on their perfume (Lipstick Rose, inspired by perfumer Ralf Schwieger's creation for Frederic Malle), fruit-based culinary creations (Sweet Grilled Lemon Margarita and Nettle Gimlet) and groundbreaking savoury drinks (White Truffle Martini).

Beautifully photographed with easy recipes and fascinating descriptions of their inspiration and creation, and with a guide to the equipment you will need to make your own libations at home, Drinks will revolutionise the art of the cocktail.

Ground-breaking alcoholic alchemy from London cocktail supremo Tony Conigliaro

About the Author

Tony Conigliaro has worked with many of the world's top chefs, restaurateurs and food writers, including Heston Blumenthal and Harold McGee. He won the award for International Bartender of the Year 2009, as well as the Observer Food Monthly award for Bar of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 (for 69 Colebrooke Row and Zetter Townhouse, respectively). Tony takes the principles of molecular gastronomy and merges them with 200 years' worth of bartending tradition, often blurring the distinction between food and drink. His drinks conjure a full sensual experience that encompasses taste, sight, smell, texture and even sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenominal book 19 Oct 2012
Most people who buy this book will probably be aware of the author and his contribution to mixology.

The book is filled with insight into what drives his creative style, and packed with great recipes for some of his cocktails. Each drink is accompanied by a beautiful photograph, which I wasn't expecting. Most cocktail books simply contain endless spec lists!

At the end of the book there is also advice and recipes aimed at those with a laboratory at their disposal, and not really for the casual cocktail enthusiast - but that makes it interesting!

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book 25 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Without doubt the best wriiten book on this topic that I have ever read. In fact, it's so well done that I suspect there might be a bit of ghost writing involved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Master of cocktails 8 Nov 2013
Tony Conigliaro is often referred to as the 'Heston Blummenthal of the drinks world' - and with this, his first book (in which Heston writes the foreword), it's not hard to see why. There's a good variety of cocktails, ranging from the simple to the much more complex 'concept' drinks. These concept drinks are where Tony's creativity shines through - each recipe is as much an insight into his mindset behind the drink as it is a step-by-step guide to recreating it at home.

Divided into 17 chapters, the book also covers techniques, recommended equipment, glassware, and how to make those finishing touches such a liqueurs, tinctures and essences. True, you probably wouldn't be able to make every cocktail in the book without buying some seriously hi-tech (and expensive) kit, but there's just the right balance of aspirational and genuinely realistic recipes to keep anyone busy (and seriously impress at your next cocktail party).

A must for any serious cocktail-lover who wants to recreate some of Tony's magic at home.
