Shutter Island was my first Dennis Lehane book and I didn't rate it very highly. In fact, in my review I expressed the view that I wouldn't be reading any more of his work despite the fact that I liked the way he wrote. Since I'm reviewing another of his stories I clearly reconsidered.
Thank goodness I did. These two offerings are absolute golddust, the book even feels good to hold! The plots are well thought out, the characters, all of them, are complex, well drawn and likeable. The writing is superb, no other word for it. If the truth be told I'm quite upset that the author thinks he's too old to write more Kenzie & Genaro novels, the genre is the poorer for it and I would urge him to change his mind.
If you like Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly or Robert Crais buy this, you will not be disappointed. I now have the other three K & G thrillers on my shelf and I can't wait to get stuck in.
