Amazon.co.uk Review
Like Owen Wilson himself, Drillbit Taylor has a loose, shaggy-dog appeal. Wilson plays a homeless ex-soldier who wants to emigrate illegally to Canada--and when three misfit high-school students hire him to protect them from bullies, he sets out to fleece them for the money he needs to get away. Naturally, this being a formulaic crowd-pleaser, he bonds with the kids and discovers that maybe his life isn't so worthless after all. Fortunately for moviegoers, the creators of Drillbit Taylor (including co-writer Seth Rogen, star of Knocked Up) have the wit to tweak the formula and give what could have been prefabricated and bland some grit, surprises, and genuine laughs (as well as an allusion to this movie's obvious inspiration, the 1980 teen-movie classic My Bodyguard). While nowhere near as funny (or as rude) as Rogen's previous co-writing effort, the dorkily sublime Superbad, Drillbit Taylor benefits from a similar grasp of the genuine cravings and frustrations of adolescence. Still, it's Wilson's movie, and his slacker-romantic rhythm gives the humour its swing. Also featuring Leslie Mann (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), who is woefully underutilised as Wilson's love interest. One sneaky bit of casting: The main bully is played by Alex Frost, who played an unhappy teen driven to shoot up his school in director Gus Van Sant's Elephant. --Bret Fetzer

DVD Description

Starring Oscar-nominated comedy genius Owen Wilson (Zoolander, Wedding Crashers), co-written by Seth Rogen (Knocked-Up) and produced by the Emmy-award nominated Judd Apatow (Superbad, Knocked-Up) Drillbit Taylor is the kid-friendly comedy that tells the story of three misfits who decide to take matters into their own hands, coming to DVD on July 21 2008, from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Eager to start their first day of High School, the socially inept Ryan (Troy Gentile, Nacho Libre), Wade (Nate Hartley) and Emmit (David Dorfman, The Ring) arrive only to find that they stand out for all the wrong reasons. With the hapless trio at the mercy of school bullies, Ryan decides to take matters into his own hands, and hires the group their own private bodyguard, Drillbit Taylor (Wilson).

Tricking the nerdy threesome into believing he is a highly-trained minder who once looked after Sylvester Stallone, Drillbit sets about toughening them up in his idea of a boot camp, before heading to the school to deal with the resident bully. With side-splitting consequences, Drillbit gradually reveals that he is not all that he claims to be, especially when he meets the boys’ stunning teacher Lisa (Leslie Mann, Knocked-Up) and changes his agenda.

Drillbit Taylor is a brilliant comedy with hysterical scenarios and crazy antics which will keep the laughter coming from start to finish, with funnyman Owen Wilson delivering another outstanding performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable escapism, 9 April 2008
The only reason I saw `Drillbit Taylor' is because my friend has a bit of a thing for Owen Wilson, not expecting much but fulfilling my duties as a friend I begrudgingly went along. What I did not expect was to see a genuinely funny and enjoyable film. Ok, so the plots not overly intelligent, three newcomers to high school are being bullied, so they hire the services of a bodyguard: Drillbit Taylor (played by Owen Wilson). What we know, but the kids don't, is that Drillbit is actually unemployed and homeless and doesn't really know anything about being a bodyguard. This is where the majority of the comedy stems from; Drillbit's attempts to train the kids, in often bizarre ways frequently leads to laughs.
Admittedly the second half of the film slows down slightly, as we learn a message of friendship and standing up to bullies; but don't take this as a criticism of the film. Indeed this films genuine and heartfelt message, showcasing the plight of the outsider is what makes this film successful.

Not likely to win any awards, `Drillbit Taylor' is enjoyable escapism with plenty of laughs and a heart-warming message at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't bore, 28 Feb 2009

In what is basically a comedy vehicle for Owen Wilson, the wonky-nosed star of The Dukes of Hazard, The Royal Tenenbaums and Zoolander plays the eponymous down and out army deserter, who answers an ad placed by three desperate high school nerds who are being victimized by the resident school bully. Wilson strolls through the film displaying his trademark dopey charm, and there are enough laugh out loud moments to make this a decent rental.

Agreeably not a oscar winner, but good fun nonetheless, with many of the jokes original and not fart orientated. But seriously, buy this NOW.
