Book Description

Ludy, a young slave girl, flees from a Caribbean slave uprising with her mother and their masters to the city of Philadelphia in 1793. She finds herself alone after her mother and masters succumb to the terrible Yellow Fever epidemic. Ludy herself is sick and unconscious, but three orphaned Haines children take her to their home and care for her, thereby saving her life. In return, Ludy vows to take care of the Haines family always.

Ludy discovers that she has several unusual gifts--a healing power, sometimes an ability to sense coming events, and an experience that she calls drifting, which takes her to wherever she is needed by a Haines child.

She and the children travel to Georgia to live with a Haines uncle, but at sixteen, Ludy commits a serious crime to protect one of the Haines children. She is helped to escape and lives with the Cherokees, always looking over her shoulder in fear of retribution. She becomes part of tribal life through marriage and children. Ludy and her family experience the hardships of the infamous march on the Trail of Tears, and those still alive settle in Oklahoma. Late in life, Ludy finally returns to Georgia with her daughter and granddaughters.

I've read all in the "Again" series of the Haines family. Ms Gott's writing is captivating. I love a story that keeps me wanting to know "what's going to happen next."

I highly recommend this for adults and YOUNG ADULTS ... what better way to learn about the history of our country than through storytelling. It is obvious that Ms Gott has done her research.
