Biography

About a year ago, Richard Swift horrifically fractured his left ring finger. For a moment his nimble guitar and piano work flashed before his eyes. Doctors were saying things like "movement and feeling could eventually return," etc, etc. Certainly, not even a little blip on the sadness radar of humanity, but a massive bummer for a fellow who has carved out a niche as one of ... 5.0 out of 5 stars the best singer songwriter in the world today 11 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
richard swift has a gift. in a genre over populated with pretenders and fakes, richard stands out as the real deal. this gem of an album takes much of what made harry nilsson, tom waits and van dyke parkes so great and gives it a contemporary edge. "buildings in america" is one of the most inspiring tunes of modern times, uplifting, powerful and most importantly real. falling for richard's music is like getting to know they guy propping up the end of the bar. it feels so genuine throughout. if there's any justice "dressed up for the letdown" will be the album to propel richard to the mainstream and get him the attention he deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swift 8 Mar 2007
By Spacejam - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This new release by Swift continues his soaring melodies and vocalizations in that haunting manner he has become known for. I found Swift after reading a review of his music in the Guardian. I looked for him on-line and found his website, where until my disc arrived in the mail, I was a daily visitor. I quickly became a rabid fan and have been telling everyone to try him out. I love the way he mixes genre's, rag time, blues, alternative rock etc. Don't miss him....you will be just as glad as I am to have found him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dressed Up for the Big Time 26 April 2007
By A. Lynch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I read a series of absolutely glowing reviews for this album, and, so consistent were they in their praise of Mr. Swift, I decided I'd scoop up a copy. I'm very glad I did, because it's an early contender for album of the year. Mr. Swift is clearly influenced by Randy Newman, which is about as far from a bad thing as you can get in music. The songs are singable, the words are clever ("I played your heart, but I broke two strings"), and the music is expertly crafted. I look forward to his albums in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dressed Up, but Decidedly NOT a Letdown 20 April 2007
By Michael Jantz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Richard Swift is a crooner. Like his contemporaries Rufus Wainwright (primarily on his first record) and M. Ward ("Transistor Radio"), he reaches back into American history of music and songwriting, digging up and effectively reviving the sounds of American radio from the *time* of the radio.

"Dressed Up..." is a continuation of the rainy day style that Swift so successfully hammered out on his previous two mini-albums. The orchestration features traditional rock pieces, along with all-american upright piano and moderate use of jazz-tinged horn. The songwriting is emotional but not gushy. He is above all things a cynic and so naturally the cynical tone come across in his music. A few of my favorite lines are "I'm alive...so tell my daughters not to cry" and "...Christ, he was strange but he was nice...they tried to kick his a**; he didn't fight back."

This new record is clearly more professionally produced than his previous material, but this fact is not made evident in a negative way. There are things like cross-fading across tracks, but the overall feel of the record succeeds in keeping with that vintage American style. Well-produced and well-written, "Dressed Up for the Letdown" is a great piece of American pop and I really can't believe I'm only the 2nd person to review this record (which has been out for 3 months already!) on Amazon. Throw away your Jack Johnson and John Mayer CDs and buy this!

This album is one of my favorites that I have heard in a long time. I am glad that I have friends that know about music because I would have never had the oppurtunity to even hear Richard Swift and now me and my wife are both huge fans.

I heard Richard Swift for the first time at a Cold War Kids concert and I loved his style! It was very unique and different and had to buy the CD just to listen to more!
