Product Description

Product Description

The techniques Natalie Bray pioneered and perfected revolutionised dress pattern designing, assisting the rise of the modern fashion industry. Her teaching has had a profound influence on design, production and education and her works are classics: fashions change but the principles of designing patterns in the flat do not.

This book – the most popular of Natalie Bray′s three works – covers the basic course and includes measurement and block patterns, circular patterns, simple pattern designing, yokes, dart manipulation, sleeves, collars and necklines, skirts, and the one–piece dress foundation.

From the Back Cover

This classic book on pattern cutting, by a Paris–trained expert, teacher and examiner has been established for many years as a basic book for students, professionals and enthusiastic amateurs.

Over a hundred diagrams and forty plates are combined with clear and detailed instructions for making patterns, so that the practical application of the methods is demonstrated side by side with the theory and basic principles. This book covers the basic course which for many years has been the foundation of all training at the Katinka School of Dress Designing and includes measurement and block patterns, circular patterns, simple pattern designing, yokes, dart manipulation, sleeves, collars and necklines, skirts, and the one–piece dress foundation.

This edition also features a Fashion Supplement which offers directions illustrated with forty illuminating diagrams for the following subjects: shirt and jacket blocks for casual wear, shoulder pad allowances, cuff and sleeve openings, pockets, wrap and strap (or placket) openings, and halter necks.

very helpful 21 Jun 2001
Format:Paperback
I've tried several pattern designing books, and I found this, and its follow up 'More Dress Pattern Designing' to be the best. It goes through step by step instructions, and is very well illlustrated. I think between them, there isn't an aspect of womens clothing they didn't cover. Theres a section on childrens clothing too in the second book. Although theres nothing about mens clothing, or about garment construction, I'd still recommend these books very highly. A great textbook, and I often refer to it.

superb book 17 Jan 2005

This book is brilliant for those with pattern cutting experience, although it doesn't have to be that much! I bought Winifred Aldrich's book first, and this fills in the gaps. It is a very "wordy" book, with lots of instructions and explanations. A brilliant pattern cutting book, as is "More Dress pattern Designing" and invaluable to those who wish to create their own patterns.

this book far out weighs any pattern design book/media i have ever had the pleasure of reading. i believe even your beginner would benefit from this book as it would teach the correct way from the beginning therefore avoiding habits! there are no shortcuts, just the 'old school' correct way to design a block pattern from scratch.

looking forward to purchasing the dress fitting edition of natalie bray someday!
