Book Description

15 Sep 2007 Bradt Travel Guides (City Guides)
Dresden is arguably the finest Baroque city in Europe, now fully rebuilt after the devastation of World War II. The city is fast becoming one of Germany's highlights and the riverside terraces are on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In Bradt's new guide, the author delves into the city's musical heritage (many of Richard Strauss's operas were premiered here) and its art treasures (including some of the greatest works of the Italian Renaissance). Visitor figures show a 12% increase year on year, with 35,000 visiting from the UK alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars visit dresden 13 Jun 2011
Essential to have some foreknowledge when visiting a new destination with only a short stay. This book meets all the requirements perfectly. Dresden is well worth visiting with 60 years of recent history still very visible. Baroque buildings very well restored and still going on and some relics of DDR. lovely welcoming people!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real asset for touring Dresden 8 Feb 2008
By Sam Wellman, PhD - Published on
Very portable and going into 2008 very accurate, considering Dresden is in considerable flux from extensive rebuilding, with varying availabilities of their collections and exhibits. The nearby attractions of Meissen and Moritzburg are presented very well too. The author's greatest strengths are his thoroughness in necessary information and his eye for architecture; his weakest is his lack of interest in shopping (except for books and music).

2.0 out of 5 stars Too vague 19 May 2009
By Carol Ventura - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although this book includes some places that other guide books ignore, the information is very confusing and not specific enough. For instance, on page 174 (included for some reason in a walking tour for Plauen) he says, "Just southeast of Potschappel is the small mansion of Schloss Burgk...where there's a mining exhibition..." Since this sentence immediately follows his Porcelain Factory listing, we assumed it was a clay mining exhibit located a few blocks away. If only he had said that it was a coal mining museum located several kilometers away and/or had included a map that showed the many turns and actual distance, we would not have walked there! The few maps that are included are not very good. His map of Meissen, for instance, has a train stop that is not open! After eating in two of the restaurants he recommends, we decided to eat in the places he did not mention instead. More accurate information, more pictures and more maps are desperately needed!!!
