Book Description

24 Mar 2009 Baedeker Guides
Baedeker Dresden features a wealth of detailed information, covering sights from A-Z with 3D illustrations, background texts on history, art and culture, religion and more, invaluable practical advice, special features, 4 recommended tours, Baedeker tips and a fully indexed, pull-out map. At the heart of this full-colour and visually inspiring guide is a wealth of well-researched information and over 180 detailed recommendations, written by experts. From the beautifully restored Frauenkirche and the historic inner city including the Katholische Hofkirche to the magnificent Elbe Valley, you will find all the sights and top attractions explored in an easy-to-read A-Z format. Superb 3D laminated illustrations display the key sights in perspective and include Frauenkirch, the Schloss (which features some of the oldest surviving remains of pre-war Dresden) and the Swinger Palace brought to life at the turn of a page. Clear and concise background texts cover Dresden s long and devastating history, tracing key events from its emergence as a Slav settlement in c600 to post-reunification and its 800th anniversary in 2006. Special feature pages cover topics of particular interest that give a rare glimpse into everyday life and throughout the guide you will find answers to some of Dresden s more intriguing cultural questions such as Who invented the coffee filter? and Where is the last and largest Silbermann organ in Dresden? . A comprehensive Practicalities chapter covers all the essential travel advice you need, including accommodation, transport, food and drink, health, shopping, money and much more, not to mention useful insider tips for travellers with disabilities and those travelling with children. It reveals when and where you can catch festivals, holidays and events throughout the year. There are plenty of Baedeker tips alongside the relevant places and sights information, making this guide ideal for on-the-spot reference. The guide is accompanied by a large, fully indexed, pull-out map, along with 30 detailed maps and plans within the text that clearly pin-point the best places to stay and top venues to eat and drink en route. There are 4 recommended tours specially designed to ensure you see the very best of this uniquely beautiful and historic city. Whether you want to explore some of the famous sights of the Old Town where architectural gems are thick on the ground or see the sights of the New Town and beyond to Dresden s idyllic surroundings you can choose the tour to suit you. Top sights are clearly plotted along the way with the distances marked between them. All of this invaluable information is contained within a handy plastic wallet that allows you to keep the guide and map together whilst ensuring that both will survive in all weather. Baedeker setting a new standard in 21st century travel guide publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and well balanced 2 July 2009
By B Adams
This is a very useful guide to a city that is still not receiving the attention it deserves. The information provided strikes the right balance between background information, must-see sights, hotels, restaurants, shops etc. I can't recommend this book highly enough, especially bearing in mind the overall shortage of travel guides to Dresden in English.

3.0 out of 5 stars Now increasingly out of date 21 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
While there are not many English Language guides to Dresden, and this reads well and has a handy map, there is a big problem: it is too out of date, a lot of the museums have moved and opening times have changed. Don't make this your only guide to Dresden.
