i have probably seen "miracle legion" ten times in and around the new haven, connecticut area. i actually went to the record release party for this cd. if you've every seen mark mulcahy live, it's an experience you'll never forget. an unparalleled singer/songwriter, mulcahy lays his soul bare on stage. miracle legion's early 90s shows were small events that gathered a loyal following, and perhaps because of the proximity, you left these intimate concerts feeling personally touched. this cd synthesizes mulcahy's passion and range. perhaps their most personal work, "drenched" is one of the best records of the 90s.

"Drenched" was a late album for miracle legion and shows a lo-fi band beefing up their sound, mostly to excellent effect.

If you're coming at Miracle Legion backwards from frontman Mark Mulcahy's recent solo work, my advice is to grab anything you can get your hands on now, as it's becoming scarcer than hens' teeth.

Their finest work as a band was on 1987's "Surprise Surprise Surprise", not available on cd ( Come on, Mezzotint ! Don't let it disappear )but there are vinyl copies here and there, also the album "Me and Mr Ray", which although listed as a Miracle Legion release is actually a brilliant two man project by Mulcahy and guitarist Mr Ray.

"Drenched" sounds a little bit slicker than the scuffed up early stuff, but there are still some tracks on here which rate amongst their very best. Most notable are "Little Blue Light", "With a Wish" and the indescribably beautiful "Out to Play".

You will most often hear two things said about Miracle Legion: that Mulcahy is Thom Yorke's favourite singer and that the band sounded like REM. Thom Yorke evidently has good taste if the former is true - Mulcahy's tangled, folky twang is equally as good essaying gentle ballads and southern rock. As for the REM thing -well, in the mid 80's, if you liked REM, you also liked Miracle Legion. You just went to much smaller venues to see them.

What marked Miracle Legion apart from their peers was the romance which ran through their songs like lifeblood. Plenty of bands got the folk-art poetry right, but only Mulcahy could sing so convincingly from his lovelorn soul.

Best of the Legion 30 Jan 2003
By Mike - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Miracle Legion is a group of songwriters who over the years have been looked over. They have been critized as "REM clones". The similarities are there but they are not clones. Though in the early years you could tell they borrowed ideas from the group. But if you listen to this CD you can tell they have began to develope there own sound, and boy does it sound good. Drenched
is filled with wonderful songs with surreal lyrics about child innocents, romance, and religion. The songs continue with great folky melodies along with firm bass and drum lines. And personally I think old Mark Mulcahy beats the pants of Mike Stipe any day.
If you can get your grubby mits on this CD, then by all means...get it!

Solid Album From a Solid Band 20 Sep 2005
By Guy McMann - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Miracle Legion's only album available on cd is a collection of songs that are bursting with energy. The opening track hits you hard and keep you tapping your feet. The album quickly loses steam after that song but luckily regains it jsut as fast with "So Good" and "Everything is Rosey." On Velvetine Mark sings with a fever rarely heard from is usualy soothing voice and its an entralling experience since his voice is one of the best in the genre. Though fans of Surprise, Surprise, Surprise may feel a little left out since these songs lack the darkness found in the previous albums, Mark's sonngwriting has only grown stronger. Perhaps the production is to blame for the lighter feel of these sonngs. Not to say it is at all bad, the glossy production gives new light to instruments that often were lost in the mix on their earlier albums. So while it feels these songs dont have the depth that their earlier work has, it is only because there is greater focus.

Impressive 12 May 2003
By David A. Edmondson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I would say that this particular album is exactly what I need sometimes. It's calm, but not. It's fun, but not simplistic. It's what I would call emblematic of how I saw the times I grew up in (the mid-nineties).

It does, however, have its weak points. Some songs are musically weak and uninspired, which detracts from the album as a whole. However, if you're a fan of the lo-fi and The Adventures of Pete & Pete, you'll probably like this album.
