5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent variety, 3 July 2007

The opening novel, Quest for Lost Heroes, is a gem of the highest quality in the treasure chest of Drenai novels. It is original, requires no previous books to have been read, and is enthralling from start to end.

Waylander II is an example of some of the classiest character driven fantasy stories. It is emotive, witty and unpredictable. Although a follow up to a previous novel it is stand alone, yet best read in sequence to fully appreciate the back story. Waylander is possibly one of the most interesting characters in fantasy fiction - a joy to read.

The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend contains the story of another great character, although one very dissimilar to Waylander. It is contrast between each of the central characters in these three novels which ensure this compendium will keep you turning pages until the end (and there are lots of them, this is no small book). A missed opportunity if you are new to Drenai novels (or have read Vol. 1) and you pass this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 20 May 2008

Here are three fantasy tales in one huge volume which should not be missed. All three novels centre around characters previously seen in earlier Drenai stories, and although these are self-contained books, they are best read in order. The first tale tells of a chapter in Druss' history - a legendary axeman, who always seems to be the centre of epic sieges. Readers will not be disappointed. The second story centres around a few lesser known characters and their involvement in city under siege from diabolical magic. The final instalment follows Waylander, an anti-hero, as his homeland comes under threat. All stories are excellently presented and offer fantasy readers a mixed set of tales, all featuring well fleshed out characters, excellent dialogue, twists and turns and strong emotional narrative. A superb compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy, 18 Jan 2012
This is a compendium of some of the late great David Gemmell's fantasy novels set in his Drenai world. To sub catagorise his novels even more, they are HEROIC fantasy. His stories are about warriors, battles, adventure, doing the right thing, protecting the weak, defeating evil. But his characters are not one dimensional cyphers, he writes about doubt, fear, anger, weakness, in other words his novels are about real people. I've read loads of fantasy and I keep coming back to Gemmell, he's the benchmark. Read, enjoy.
