Product Description

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One--a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban, The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge--a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby, Juno), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighbourhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture--a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey, Game of Thrones, 300) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control centre and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The worldwide box office returns may not have been up to the level that the makers of Dredd had wanted, but they've nonetheless got a lot to be pleased about with the film itself. Dredd is, after all, a strong, respectful adaptation of the 2000AD comic strip, that boasts a terrific leading performance from Karl Urban.

Firmly resigning memories of the lesser Sylvester Stallone-headlined Judge Dredd where they belong, this new Dredd is a grittier, far more interesting piece of cinema. Urban stars in the title role, a law enforcer of the future who works as judge, jury and executioner, in the fight to keep crime under control. Taking the rookie Anderson under his wing, played by Olivia Thirlby, the pair of them have to clean out a huge tower block full of criminals, who want them both dead.

Eschewing the need quickly to appeal to a young audience, Dredd is a hard, gritty, enthralling piece of cinema, full of visual zest and with 3D that genuinely enhances the end product. Director Pete Travis deploys 3D firmly for particular effect, and it's an effort rewarded.

Backed up by a disc featuring interesting and diverting extra features, Dredd might not have been the most popular comic book adaptation to hit the big screen in 2012, but it's pretty much the bravest. It deserves to find a far wider audience on disc. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars Anti-Climax??? 8 Nov. 2012
By Razor
This film is an introduction to a day in the life of Dredd, it doesn't need to be complex, it just needs to show one Judge's belief in getting the job done...and that's what DREDD has done. The pre-release interviews state it's for the fans and the comics were always about Dredd dealing with situations, no character building only Justice.

For the reviewers stating this film has an anti-climax, you really didn't get it.....OK there was no "boss fight", but that was the point, to Dredd, Ma-Ma was just another Perp in an everyday event in Mega City One, she derserved no more screen time at the finale than Dredd gave her, his job is to enforce Judgement to Criminals, that's what he did, then went straight back out to tackle more scum in Mega City's crime ridden existence. He is old Stoney Face, and his committment to the Justice Dept. is his chartacter, this film has always been for the fans, I for one am glad of the low budget and lack of interference from the Hollywood Gloss and Dross.

5.0 out of 5 stars Urban Dredd 24 Sept. 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Best action film I've seen in years. Short of starring Clint Eastwood in his prime you could not wish for a better Dredd than Karl Urban. He is Dredd.
And it is not a horrible PG watered down action film either. It's proper blood spraying old school violent. The soundtrack is great too.

1)18 rated hardcore violence completely in tone with the Judge Dredd character stick ya 12a violence & that stupid Rob Schneider.
2)Competent action scenes for an independent budget made movie.

1)A bigger budget would've given the movie a little more scope of Mega City One vast landscape, One hopes for a sequel to expand upon this.

Timelord Review.
"Ma'Ma's not the law I'm the law" & so the classic catchphrase is quoted & this movie goes in all guns blazing with Mega City's most badass lawman Judge,Dredd.

In a virtual lawless land were a Tower block is run by Ex Prostitute & drug bitch Ma'Ma who's control of the drug slo-mo & ownership of the tower block has resulted in Judge Joe Dredd & his new rookie partner Cassandra Anderson whom has powers of telepathy intercept a call to Towerblock & intervine when murders by Ma'Ma have been committed.

4.0 out of 5 stars He is the law 28 Jan. 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Mega City 1; a vast, sprawling metropolis, home to 800 million citizens, housed in enormous hive-like tower-blocks. Crime is rampant and is only kept in check by a department of brutal, unforgiving lawmen known as "Judges"; enforcers and executioners combined. Dredd is the best of them... he IS the law.

Dredd is a comic book hero (or perhaps anti-hero) who made his appearance in the British sci-fi comic 2000AD during the mid seventies. Ironically, he didn't appear until the second edition (or "Prog") of the comic (ironic because Dredd is unarguably one of that comic's most iconic creations). The story lines were at first glance relatively simple action adventure affairs but underlying them were some fairly complex (for a pre-teen reader) socio-political concepts. They also strayed far and wide from their action roots to cover romance, road-movie and comedy themes as well.

While earlier generations grew up with Biggles, Bulldog Drummond and Dan Dare, mine had Dredd.

Now, there has been one previous attempt to film Judge Dredd - Stallone's depiction is almost universally despised by true fans of the ultimate lawman, but I honestly didn't find the film too bad. As I remember it, the visualisation of the whole Dredd concept was done surprisingly well and even Sly managed to convince me "Eye am the leaurgh!". The film's most egregious crime was to allow Dredd to remove his helmet - something that only happened twice in the comic (once blanked out by a "c e n s o r e d" sticker and then with his face swaddled in bandages.

4.0 out of 5 stars dredd good 14 Dec. 2012
By The Man
The basic aim of Dredd is simple - it needs to be bold, true to the source material and full of juicy violence, enough to wipe out the memories of the notoriously poor Stallone attempt of 1995 that threw plenty of money at the screen without bothering to work on anything resembling a decent script.

e film is written by long time fan Alex Garland (28 Days later, Sunshine), and has had plenty of input from Dredd's creator (and still main writer even now) John Wagner. Filmed in South Africa on what passes for a tight budget these days (especially for Sci-Fi), it could be compared to District 9 in terms of the sheer effort put into it, with a result that is similarly impressive although aesthetically miles apart. Director Pete Travis (Endgame) does an excellent job, and between them they have turned in a film that will stand the test of time as a superior, adult action movie.

The premise is reasonably simple, something that works well as an introduction to what is, in the comics at least, a sprawling future world. Dredd is accompanied on patrol by rookie Judge Anderson, very well played by Olivia Thirlby, who is on the verge of failing her final assessment but is being given a second chance because of her powerful, and rare, psi abilities. A routine triple homicide (it's that sort of city) turns into a siege when they are trapped in a massive tower block by criminal nutjob Ma Ma (Lena Headey) and forced to fight their way out and stop her manufacturing the addictive new drug, Slo Mo. Obviously there's a bit more to it than that, but this is the basic set up and it works very well indeed, allowing for plenty of violence, some character development and no few explosions.
