Book Description

1 Jan 2003
This is the long-awaited follow-up from glasshaus' "Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development" (1904151116), which Matt Brown (Deamweaver Community Manager, Macromedia) described as "the VERY best book I have ever seen dealing with databases and web programming".

But you don't need to have read that book; any experience of developing PHP sites with Dreamweaver MX or Ultradev is a great starting point. This book takes your PHP sites beyond the functions provided by server behaviors. It teaches you PHP, from the syntax to full applications, from the point of view of a Dreamweaver user, covering PHP-generated email, XML, Sessions and Cookies, Flash and two case-studies - a Training Log and a Content Management System.

The chapters take you from basic syntax through to developing full applications, teaching the basic functionality, then showing you how to use it in real-world examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Bargain 3 Sep 2003
By MartinH
Format:Paperback
Having bought both Dreamweaver MX PHP books by Glasshaus, I was somewhat doubtful on the quality of this book and its content based on the first book that I had struggled to get through, but boy was I wrong!

This book not only picks up where the first one left off but also recovers bits that had been missed out, all coding is available on together with errata's and they even offer support on this book unlike the first.

I cannot praise this book at enough, it isn't for beginners or the faint hearted as it does go into some aspects of PHP in depth but the results are clear, by the time you have finished the book you have a fully working and useable application that can easily be recreated, developed and sold to your clients, SUPERB!

I am just so glad that Glasshaus sorted themselves out and produced an excellent and insightful read! I wouldn't normally give 5 stars to any book but because its was SO much better than the first, I'll give it the extra 1...! *****

5.0 out of 5 stars Next step with Dreamweaver and PHP 16 Jan 2003
By Foti Massimo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a follow-up to "Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development", and take to the next step the readers already familiar with Dreamweaver and PHP. The authors definitely did a remarkable job; covering a broad range of topics, from error handling (too often neglected by web developers!), to creating extensions, object oriented programming (a brief but effective coverage), file handling, mail integration, Regular Expressions and much more, including quite advanced topics like generating images and Flash integration.

The chapters are pretty much self contained, so a linear reading isn't mandatory here, assuming you know the basis of PHP you can just jump directly to a chapter depending on your needs or tastes. Notwithstanding the fact that glasshaus assembled a team of six different authors, the quality of the chapters is consistently excellent. I was only somewhat disappointed by the XML chapter but that's just because I think PHP and XML integration is not up to the level I expect from a modern language, definitely not the author's fault!

Be advised that this book is much more about PHP than Dreamweaver because, out of the box, Dreamweaver offers only basic tools for PHP development and if you want to take the next step you need to dive into the code. Beginners may be better served by "Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development" from the same publisher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but full of errors 1 May 2003
By Julie A - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have found this book very helpful in going beyond the basics. I would not recommend it for beginners for several reasons but mostly because there are a ton of errors that would frustrate a newbie. I checked their site for error listings and there is only one. If they would keep the list updated then I would highly recommend this book.

If you are an avid Dreamweaver user with some experience with PHP handcoding, not just the queries Dreamweaver lets you write, this book is great. Otherwise, keep looking.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 26 Jun 2004
By Scott David Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book shortly after it was published, before there were any other books available on the subject. The author assumes (by mentioning it in an early chapter only) you will be using Windows OS, I wanted the information for Mac OS X. If you are taking advantage of Mac OS X and it's Unix platform, you won't find any information in this book that is relevant to develping PHP and MySQL on an OS X platform.
