Amazon.co.uk Review

Dreamweaver 4 Hands On Training lives up to its name, offering over a hundred step-by-step exercises that teach how to author Web pages with Macromedia's market-leading design tool. Bundled with the book is a CD containing all the files needed to complete the exercises, along with 16 Quicktime movies that demonstrate particular techniques. Both Macintosh and Windows users are catered for, with clear notes whenever something is slightly different on a particular platform. The book is great for beginners, who will soon achieve high quality results.

The authors start at the very beginning, with short background chapters on HTML and on the Dreamweaver interface. The first exercise shows how to define a new Dreamweaver Web site and from there it's hands on training all the way. You learn the basics of including text and images in a page, how to make hyperlinks, using different fonts and styles and laying out tables. Other chapters cover frames, rollover effects where an image changes as you move the mouse over it, use of Cascading Style Sheets for advanced formatting, interactive forms, and extending Dreamweaver's features with Behaviours. The final chapters tackle Dynamic HTML, reusing content with templates and libraries and how to get your files onto a Web server.

Although it covers the same ground as several other Dreamweaver titles, Hands On Training is particularly well designed, with an uncluttered page layout, carefully chosen screenshots with annotations and highlights and panelled notes and tips. Dreamweaver newcomers will soon be up to speed. --Tim Anderson

This is quite simply the best self-paced training book I have used yet! So many books on "how to use" software amount to nothing more than a manual for people who already know what they want to do. This allowed me to gain immediate insight not just into "how" but "why" I would want to use features of Dreamweaver. I feel completely confident now that I can create useable and attractive web pages from this book alone. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to using Dreamweaver 4.As a total beginner I bought this book after reading reviews for the version 3 book. This book is well laid out and very easy to follow and understand through worked examples of a website. Like a good novel I found it hard to put down once started. However as the authors point out it is a reworked version of their Dreamweaver 3 book using the same examples so I don't think anyone who has read the version 3 book would find this book of any real use. But for a beginner like myself it is a must read.

This book warrants serious consideration by anyone wanting to learn Dreamweaver. The authors are both obviously skilled in training by moving from the simple to the more complex, laying the foundations at an early stage from which to build on later. By the end of the book I had learnt so much and was able to incorporate the concepts into a web site I was building. The project files, and graphics for inclusion in those projects, are contained in the accompanying CD Rom which are used to great effect. To reinforce the contents of the book there are 'quicktime' movies on the accompanying CD Rom which walk you through some of the concepts - a great way of both reinforcing the contents and providing an easy means of future reference. Although I had previously attended night classes at college to learn how to use Dreamweaver, I now realise I could have learnt far more for a fraction of the price had I simply just used this book.
