Product Description

CD Description

Background Legendary 80s rockers Big Country reformed earlier this year to much critical acclaim. The original three members fronted by The Alarms Mike Peters and Bruce Watsons son Jamie, on second guitar played two sold out tours in January and April and also 6 major festivals including the Isle of Wight ( they were brilliant - John Giddings, promoter), T in the Park, V Festival and Oxegen . Not many bands earn a standing ovation fewer still before they've even played a chord. But then Big Country aren't like most other acts and tonight, as the power through a breathtaking two hour set, they prove they're still in a class of their own Keith Smith - The News of the World. Peters is not so much a 'replacement' for Adamson as a ringmaster, respectfully helping to bring BC's music back to life in all of its stirring, panoramic glory 'Wonderland', 'Chance', 'Harvest Home', ' Just a Shadow'. 'Fields of Fire', 'In a Big Country' and a mesmersing 'Porroh Man' coaxing the best out of band and audience alike. A triumph . - Scott Rowley Classic Rock. The band exploded onto the scene in 1983 with anthemic songs such as 'Fields of Fire' & 'In A Big Country' which were culled from their classic debut album 'The Crossing' which sold several million worldwide. They followed up with a number one album 'Steeltown'. They released 8 studio albums all of which entered the Top Ten and released 28 singles 5 of which were also Top Ten. Sadly Stuart Adamson who founded the band passed away in December 2001. Bass guitarist Tony Butler says "To play again as Big Country was something that was only going to happen if we could find someone who could compliment the band and sing the songs in the way they need to be sung - with heart and soul. Mike Peters from The Alarm stepped in to fill the premise. It was about time the songs got another airing, and we think Stuart would be pleased". This release is a 4 disc set. The two hour concert spread across two dvds and two cd's. There is a 12 page booklet with sleeve notes written by all of the band. Big Country are back and candidates for the 'comeback of the year'.

I got this as soon as it came out through the Big Country website. I went to see them in concert on this tour (albeit in Oxford) and it was like reeling the years back. The only reason I knew I must be old is because I looked at my fellow audience members!!!!
This is an album that most Big Country fans will want to have. Mike starts off a bit croaky and slightly out of tune at some points..but to me that is the beauty of live music. It isn't the studio engineered perfection that some want. It's live, with mistakes and additional bits that I want to hear. He improves throughout the concert and the crowd seemed to warm to him. The music is played as you remember it and there is only one band that sounds like Big Country!!
The songlist of the concert was what I wanted to hear, especially my personal favourite,Porroh man.
I'm no technical whizz, so I expect some people will say that there are so many ways that the recording could have been improved or the camera work at the concert could have been better. But, do you know what? For those of us who went to the tour venues, and didn't expect Mike to be a like-for-like replacement for Stuart, but wanted to experience the music that we grew up with in the raw, then this is a great buy.
Buy it, listen to it, then listen to it again, it seems to get better every time I listen to it. I have watched the DVD once, and I thought it was superb, but it was mainly the music I wanted to hear again.

The first few minutes of this concert left me wondering why I had been tempted (and why they had bothered). However Mike Peters finds his feet, the band find their groove and the gig goes from strength to strength. By the time I got to the end I was totally won over. No-one would have expected Mike to replace Stuart and I don't think he even tries. Full marks for Mike for the respect he gives the past and he very much becomes part of the band for the future. What does come over as well is how much all of them were enjoying themselves and this is not always apparent with bands. Passion cannot be faked.

I saw Big Country many years ago at the Parr Hall in Warrington and it was one of the best concerts I had ever been to. This has tempted me out of retirement to see them on next years tour.

I thoroughly recommend this set.

Awesome at Edinburgh! 27 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
Awesome sums it up! I never thought I would be writing about how I can't stop playing songs I have been listening too for over twenty years, but I am. The interpretations and slight twists make these recordings special and unique. I am in love with BC music all over again. The new energy is observable and a delight. People often write about how Stuart cannot be replaced - okay, but Mike Peters and Jamie Watson have been incredible editions and the new songs that I have heard beyond Another Country seem destined to make BC right again. God Bless this band - as diverse as my tastes are, I will always appreciate this band way beyond a simple review.
