I know it's a bold claim, but this book lives up to it. I have read about every star trek book written - certainly all about the classic crew - and this is head and shoulders the best.
The characterisation is spot on, but it doesn't restrict itself to how we normally see the characters, but even in unusual situations, every note rings true. I read it years ago and I read it again recently and it is brilliant.
There are several story strands, but the most wonderful is the idea that McCoy has amnesia after an accident, and has reverted to his 20 year old self, believing he has recovered after a riding throw. He is then faced with being head of a medical department, and scared to death of the imposing Spock. He finds it inconceivable that he's regarded as the only person who holds their ground with Spock in an argument. We then see the ship, it's routine and it's life through the new eyes of an old friend, as they deal with a horrific menace that truly chills the blood.
Wonderful stuff. Most Star Trek books I read hopefully, but put down a bit disappointed at their superficiality - this was a marvellous lesson in how it can and should be done. It's just a shame she never did more about the classic Enterprise.

Titan continue their line of novels based upon the original Star Trek series with #3 Dreams Of The Raven by Carmen Carter.
The Enterprise receives a distress call from a merchant vessel and rushes to help, believing that Klingons may be responsible for attacking, hijacking and destroying another trading fleet.
When they arrive they find only one ship left, badly damaged and about to fall apart. However, there is a disastrous event and the Enterprise is critically damaged. As the crew attempt to repair the vessel, now adrift in space and weeks away from any facility, another accident happens when a malfunction in the ship's gravity plating occurs.
There is only one victim - Dr. McCoy. The incident causes a head trauma and when he wakes from his coma they find he has lost all memory back to when he fell from a horse and suffered a similar head trauma - 25 years ago.
As the crew sift through the debris of the fleet, they find bodily remains of a new lifeform, a race of humanoid avians with powerful claws and hard chitinous beaks. The possibility that the Klingons have formed an alliance with a new race threaten to destabilise the quadrant.
It's nice for a book to focus on McCoy for a change and the nature of his injury gives us some insight into the man he was before Starfleet. His exchanges with Spock are particularly illuminating, especially as the two are now on very different footing, with Spock firmly in the right nearly all of the time. However, the real surprise comes in the last third of the book when McCoy reveals something about the current situation which nobody knew.
A good read and a very classic Trek adventure.

i have just finished this book and i couldnt put it down,i love the way mcoy behaves after he loses his memory and the aliens dont have a culture that takes up every page to describe them,kirk has his fair share of problems,but the best thing about this book is ,mcoy being the cynical one of the crew ,starts to question everything and its like the questions that have run through your mind about the federation ,the crew and what its like to have so much responsibility ,to finish it had a brilliant ending i look forward to reading more from carmen carter.
