Product Description

Product Description

This is an illustrated book on the the Kingdom of Bhutan, tucked in the Himalayas, which has remained a forbidden and almost impenetrable country for over three centuries. The author and photographer were fortunate enough to meet Princess Ashi Cheoki, who treated them as personal guests and granted them entry into the forbidden East. The author describes how the further east they went the deeper was their understanding of the country and its people. Greeted with fascination by the Bhutanese, they were received with hospitality when staying in temples, barns or with village chieftains. They also met the Dalai Lama.

Travel vision 2 Nov 2003
By chance, I picked up this book inside a huge tent filled with all kinds of literature and just flicked open the first few pages. That's all it took to become totally captivated by this journey into the strange unknown world that seems like fiction. My friends asked, after reading the back, "Is it fiction?", so intriguing and strange are the contents of Katie Hickmans journalistic diaries. This book is worth getting for anyone who has the vaguist interest in other cultures, or for anyone who needs their faith re-establishing in the peculiarity and individuality of humanity.

a very shallow book. 13 Mar 2010
I read this book when I was in Bhutan (some time ago) and was disappointed by its silly and superficial tone. In fact, I'm surprised it is still in print considering how devoid of any useful information it is. Bhutan has not, in general, been well served by the few western tourists who have been fortunate to travel there and written about it. I still do not know of any 'travel' type book that can be recommended. Although there are a couple of good guide-books written by people who do know the country, its culture and its people (F. Pommaret-Imaeda's, for example). Often the most interesting, useful and well-written are the accounts of explorers from the 19th century and early 20th, but these are only available from libraries.
