Book Description

26 Sep 2012

It is May of 1976 when fourteen-year-old Bradley Hitchens stumbles upon a mysterious metal artifact in the North Florida woods. Spooked by a feeling the something-or someone- is watching him, Brad takes the odd metal scrap with no idea of the peril that lies ahead, or that beneath the forest floor a greater mystery waits.

Seeking answers to the strange metal object's riddle, Brad's quest endangers university researchers and his own family. They are all unaware that the government has taken a keen interest in the find and will stop at nothing to ensure that no one discovers the truth. When the artifact is lost, Brad must hide from federal agents for seven years, relying only on his wits and trusted family members as he struggles to recover and safeguard the artifact and relay its important message to the public on his own terms.

In Dreamland Diaries, a young man faces government pursuit and cover-ups and meets a most unusual new friend as he tries to protect another deep secret-one that has the potential to shake world philosophy to its very foundation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and exciting book to read. 8 Jan 2013
By Whitebird33 - Published on Amazon.com
A very entertaining and suspense filled story which starts out with a young boy and his father living in a Cracker Style house on the shores in a North Florida Coastal Community in the late 70's. Opening up with wonderfully descriptive images of the natural beauty of the area and will hit home for anyone who has grown up, lives near the water, and if you haven't you'll probably find yourself wanting to visit. I found myself not only intrigued as the plot opens but entertained and being taught. Exactly the style of reading I love to savor. For me, Dreamland Diaries accomplished it all.

It is a real page turner from the beginning. The story starts with the simple life of this young man and proceeds to include a mysterious finding, secret government interest, and the help of an unusual friend. The twist and turns through the story happens not only in the plot, but in the major players as well. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. The characters are colorful, diverse, likeable and well formed. I felt as if I knew some of them before the book ended. I'd highly recommend this book to friends and family from ages 13 to 99.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read! 24 Oct 2013
By RabbitPond - Published on Amazon.com
I met the author in person, read back of the jacket, and was instantly intrigued. Could it be that I was 14 in 1976, living in the Florida panhandle, and interested in nature, archaeology, and the possibility of extraterrestrials? Yes, Yes, and Yes (Some Coincidence!)! Bruce Ballister's "Dreamland Diaries" captures the imagination and has made a fan of me! Even if you do not live and breathe the landscape he so cleverly weaves into the story (local landmarks, actual meteorological happenings, Florida lore)you will delight in the detail and flavor of this science fiction thriller. I'm thinking The Yearling meets the X-files meets Close Encounters. This book crescendos chapter after chapter, and has a satisfying finale, or is it a "finale"??? Buy, read, and prepare to be thrilled! I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruce Ballister captures the Wilderness Coast, & its untamed charms in his sci-fi mystery set in 1970s North Florida. 20 Nov 2013
By E. Brock - Published on Amazon.com
As a library administrator living in North Florida, I was Immediately captivated by the lyrical descriptions of the "old Florida" coastal environs and towns I have loved for over forty years. Ballister has managed to create an engaging story of family, history, and intergalactic power struggles that takes you from battle scenes in space to a cracker house in Wakulla Beach, to Area 51, to government agents who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a mysterious artifact...

I recommend this inaugural effort as a very successful novel, filled with action, excellent character development and first rate story telling. Can't wait for a sequel!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional work of science fiction 8 May 2013
By Robert C. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
This fascinating story is an unusual combination of spy thriller, Florida geology and ecology, social commentary, and science fiction. The central characters are well-developed and will appeal to both juveniles and adults. The descriptive passages are powerful and believable. The author has obviously done his homework in a surprising range of fields and pulls it all together in a fast-moving page-turner. A really good read with an ending that is both surprising and satisfying while leaving the way open for a sequel that we hope will follow soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down 6 Jan 2014
By John Hoover - Published on Amazon.com
I received this book as a Christmas present and finished it over the holiday vacation. Having lived in Tallahassee all my life and spent much time along the Gulf coast, I felt an immediate attraction to the story and the surroundings. Bruce has created a tale that is both exciting and descriptive of this beautiful area. It a great story and one that will appeal to all ages.

Bradley Hitchens has discovered a curious object in the marshes of Wakulla Beach. He soon discovers that the Government wants it so badly that harassment, intimidation, and even murder will result. His courage and cleverness keep the artifact hidden for a while, but agents continue to close in on him and his family.

The ending is surprising and leaves the possibility of a sequel--I can't wait!
