Lovely little number! 21 April 2008

I personally feel that 'Dreaming of Me' has always come under heavy criticism for all the wrong reasons. Even on its first release, it failed to become a hit as people took it too seriously and saw it as silly pop-flop. However, over 20 years on, the song to me still retains it's original fun value. This was the roots of Mode, and I can't help but love it! The lyrics, though simple, have a true and child-like value to that of being in a class-room and doodling in your exercise book whilst day-dreaming. This innocence is what draws you to the song, and I just wish Mode had kept this spirit alive longer.

Excellent track, though I recommend just getting the first 'The Singles' album instead, which is obviously better value.

Typically representative of Vince Clarke's period, this single is a sheer pop delight: it didn't reach the success that would soon fall on "Just can't get enough", but it's just as joyful and captivating. Gahan sings softly, without the powerful and menacing tone he would later develop, and the style is simple and unpretentious. Yet, it's an important single: it was the first of this great band, and despite its simplicity it still manages to entertain. The B-side is more eerie and haunting, though not as catchy. Pure nostalgia!
