5.0 out of 5 stars Early Joe, at his best, 11 Dec 2011

Released after Joe`s breakthrough release (Surfing With The Alien), I remember thinking it was a perverse EP at the time - one new song, and three live songs? However, the three live songs are different to their studio counterparts, and the new song is fantastic.

"Crush of Love" is a delight; although it wouldn`t have fitted rightly on "Surfing...". It is one of the many songs dedicated to his wife, Rubina. It contains a lovely wah-wah melody, and is one of Joe`s most playable songs (from a guitarist`s perspective). This is followed by a live take of the mighty "Ice Nine", an aggressive song, with some unspeakably fast and technically awesome solos, and is almost as much fun as the studio version. "Memories" is the highlight though - opening with an improvised bluesy solo, it morphs into a very different version of the relatively unheralded track from Joe`s debut (Not of This Earth). I love the studio version, but this adds a few extra dimensions. The record is finished off with another hugely different version of a familiar song, "Hordes of Locusts". It`s very heavy and dramatic, and I wish Joe would play it live these days! Anyway, yep, it might only be four songs but they`re all different and excellent in their own way, so if you like Joe, it`s certainly worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars The crush for Joe's music, 17 Jan 2009

Basically, i bought this CD just for the 1st track "The crush of love" which is basically poetry without words. It's not so as fast as other songs by Joe but it's really beautiful music. As usual the crystal clear production contributes to the beauty of this track. The other 3 tracks are live tracks and too are good. Joe is a precise live guitarist and again the production is good. Thanks Joe, i'm tarikh jumeer

5.0 out of 5 stars Not essential, but get it if you're a fan!, 20 May 2006

This probably isn't the best cd to start off with for Joe Satriani. It only contains four tracks, three of which are live (from 1987 and 1988) and the other is a new studio track.

The first track 'Crush of love' is the studio track, and it is actually excellent. Just a sort of mid-tempo, upbeat song with a great use of wah-wah guitar. Definately one of Satch's best earlier songs. The other three songs are live, first is 'Ice nine', which is the live version from the song in the 'Surfing with the alien' album. There is nothing too much different about it, in comparison to the studio version. It's just interesting to hear it played live. Track 3 is 'Merories', which is a live version from the 'Not of this Earth' album. Frankly I don't really like it. The studio version is 4:06 mins, this live version is about 9 mins, so the song gets extended quite a bit, and it kinda gets boring. The final song is, in my opinion, the highlight. It is a live version of 'Hordes of locusts', which was also on 'Not of this Earth'. If you haven't heard it, it's quite a hard-rocking, heavy song, with some great soloing thrown in. For me, it is better than the studio version.

So, if you're a fan of Satch's earlier albums, or you just want to extend your Satriani collection, give this a look. It is worth it just for track 1 and 4.
