It is a thrilling, unputdownable five-star read for the most part. Just occasionally, however, you will find that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword - and lodged firmly between the shoulder blades of Diana Ross. As a fan, you will feel like you have been kicked in the stomach. Dreamgirl's original 1986 publication met with huge success in the USA, where Ross's chart career came to an immediate end with not even that year's UK number one "Chain Reaction" reaching the top 50 in America. Coincidence?
Mary Wilson is a fabulous solo entertainer, a candidate - on stage at least and hopefully on her upcoming brand new CD from Holland-Dozier-Holland's label - for the title of my "very favourite". As anyone who saw her performing the pick of the Motown catalogue in the 2000 UK tour of "Dancing In The Streets" will testify, the Supremes should have had at least two, and probably three lead singers. It is a pity that Miss Wilson's greatest solo commercial achievement is likely to be this book, republished here with its sequel, Supreme Faith.
In the latter, Mary recalls how Diana reacted to her presence after the publication of the former and you have to ask yourself, "is it any wonder?"
