I found this book a bit of a disappointment. There's a lot of plot summary which could and should have been put into an appendix. And this means that inevitably there's little analysis of the books; and not much focus on recurring features. There's also an annoying habit of referring to the books with shortened titles - e.g. Goodbye Look instead of The Goodbye Look. There's also some evidence of one of the most bizzarre features of writing about MacDonald: attempts to find connections between his own life and his fictional private eye.
