2.0 out of 5 stars To Dream? Perchance to sleep ..., 20 Jun 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Were it not for the fact that I review so many of Zorn's albums it would tempting to skip this one completely, as there's really not a lot to say about it. The personnel all come from Zorn's band Electric Masada, but you can forget the ear-plugs because nothing on this disc is going to test or challenge you.

This album is the "sequel" to Zorn's earlier album, The Gift, and shares with that album a tendency towards a somnolent atmosphere, with Marc Ribot's electric guitar prominent. There are - as usual with later Zorn - some Middle Eastern inflections on the tracks, and the presence of three percussionists in what is at most a septet means that the leisurely shuffle of a lounge bar band is never left behind for long.

If it weren't for the odd disagreeable noise that may wake you up if you nod off, this could pass for upmarket muzac. Certainly the production and performances are high-end, even if the tracks disappoint. Unfortunately, though, the introduction of screaming into "Anulikwutsayl" is just one of those misjudged leaps that places this album firmly between two stools: much too dull for fans of Zorn's more aggressive material, but no rival to the more laid-back Filmworks albums such as Invitation To A Suicide or The Rain Horse.

This is, then, a second-tier Zorn album at best, yet there are still a lot of individual pleasures in the instrumental performances, with Jamie Saft on keyboard and Kenny Wollesen on vibes especially worthy of mention. If you are a fan of the luscious instrumental details that have enlivened so many of Zorn's albums over the last decade, then this aspect of the album might be enough to add another star or two.

Of course, with this line-up there is so much musical ability on display that they could have played it blindfold. Perhaps they did ... it would explain a lot.

[Edit: Since writing this review I've seen the entire album played live in concert by the original line-up. I enjoyed it, but even so am going to stand by the original review, because on revisiting this album I don't find it much improved. Some Zorn fans seem to think that everything he releases is mandatory 4/5-star territory, but that isn't my experience.]
