Product Description

Product Description

Does your imaginative, computer-proficient daughter tune out in the classroom? Does your spirited son become headstrong and aggressive when faced with the simplest decisions? Does your bold, energetic child have trouble focusing on basic tasks?

Millions of children--one in five--have what psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D., calls the Edison trait: dazzling intelligence, an active imagination, a free-spirited approach to life, and the ability to drive everyone around them crazy. Named after Thomas Edison--who flunked out of school only to harness his talents and give the world some of its finest inventions--the Edison trait is on the rise in our younger generation.

The heart of the issue is that they think divergently--they overflow with many ideas--while schools, organized activities, and routines of daily living reward convergent thinking, which focuses on one idea at a time. Drawing on examples from more than two decades of private practice, Dr. Palladino helps us cope with this challenging aspect of our child's intellect and personality, explaining in clear terms:

- The three Edison-trait personality types: dreamers, discoverers, and dynamos
- The eight steps to understanding, reaching, and teaching your Edison-trait child
- The connection between the Edison trait and A.D.D.

I am an Education Professional with a bright child who simply refuses to conform, questions everything, procrastinates to the extreme, holds unfeasibly high self standards, gets frustrated when he cannot reach them, is opinionated, hates sports, detests playtime, cannot bond with his peers - I could go on and on. None of these traits are seen as positive in an educational environment. And yet here is this beautiful child - imaginative, creative, intelligent, curious, passionate and spontaneous and all anyone wants to do is label him ADD or worse. It is heartbreaking when you know that you have this incredible little man who has nothing wrong with him but a different way of seeing the world. If you are feeling like I have felt, read this book and feel empowered to say "I do not have a defiant unyeilding child but a strong willed, determined individual who could change the world" Thomas Alva Edison did! The Edison-trait is a label I can cope with.

This book is a breath of fresh air! At last a book that doesn't just discuss the intellect of the child but the personality traits as well. It describes three types of children, The Dreamer, The Discoverer and The Dynamo. My son is a combination of the last two. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you have a bright, fidgety child and people constantly ask you if it's a food allergy or ADD when you know in your heart it isn't then this is the book for you!

If teachers say your child is difficult, unhappy and underperforming at school then read this book. It may give you the answers you are looking for. ALL teachers should read it because there will be children in their classes whose needs are not being met by conventional right-brain educational techniques.

This book could radically change the way you appraise, communicate and feel about your child and lead to a great deal more happiness in your household and confidence in your child.
