Book Description

Emil is a wanderer, a fugitive from an unjust law, and being alive is his only crime. Emil is an Abnormal - a seemingly normal human being gifted with superhuman abilities.
From the second Emil first channeled the light energy his body produced, his life was no longer his own. Abnormals like him are forced to join the king's covert division named Legion to enforce his tyranny, or be put down like beasts. For years Emil has been able to evade the hand of the king and his capture by Legion, until on a seemingly normal night Emil's village is ambushed, and he is forced to helplessly watch as a fire-manipulating Abnormal sent by the king leads a massacre that destroys everything he loves.

Enraged and sick of running, Emil swears a path of revenge. For the ones he loves he picks up the sword to single-handedly bring justice to a dying world and serve as the last light in a world covered in darkness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 21 Mar. 2014

Emil is a rogue, a vagabond, an outcast. He’s the subject of ruthless system of government-sanctioned persecution against his “kind”. Despite a life of extreme hardship and pain, he longingly seeks stability, a home, and a family. In what shapes up to be a corrupt police state, Emil is the last hope of freedom and equality. He is the Last Light.

After being on the lam for years, he finds new and interesting friends, some of which are of his “kind”. He fights, with stunning strength of character, enemies old and new alike. He wields a unique weapon – a flowing, ethereal aura of light. He produces, shapes, and molds this light with his hands and can directly attack his enemies or create a sort of “pushing” effect with his light. It seems there are others with different “abilities,” in an almost X-Men sense. One of his allies teleports while one of his enemies has power over crystals that shoot out from the earth.

The persecution of these super-humans is the driving force of the underlying political struggle, while Emil’s struggle to find peace in the hardship drives the character development. Emil, after an intense bout of self-discovery, decides to stop hiding and, with the help of new friends, challenge the bureaucracy.

I regret that Emil didn't evolve an active love interest with the main female character, but that is forgivable. Villavasso ‘s supporting characters and antagonists are interesting and rather deep, but not as much so as Emil. The novel seems to be written for a teenage audience, but has several “adult” situations that would almost certainly be inappropriate for preteens/younger teens. I’d recommend “The Last Light” to teens and young adults who are interested in sci-fi and/or fantasy, as it delves into both realms.

“The Last Light” seemed to me like an intricate blend of “Highlander” and “X-Men”, with the best aspects of both. After a twist ending and awesome finale, I eagerly anticipate the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 27 April 2014

Omg is all I can say. I don't like revealing what is going to happen in books through reviews, but the book ended and I want more. I cannot wait until book two is out. The twist at the end can out of no where. I cannot believe it. Like really? Emil has such a good sprit but I have no idea how it will all end in book two. If that's the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read 16 Mar. 2014

A kind-hearted boy with a super-human ability, named Emil, is constantly followed by a corrupt king and his men. They destroy everything that he comes in contact with an attempt to capture him and use him for his ability. He survives to protect those he loves and take down the corrupt king.

The way it is written is much like an anime, the battles are intense and described well without over-doing it like most other books. The book is not very drawn out but has a lot to it, and the plot is interesting with its twists.

Side note: I especially liked the powers and implementations in battles and hope to see more of that in the next book.
5.0 out of 5 stars The fantastic story of Emil is both fascinating and gripping 30 Jun. 2014

The fantastic story of Emil is both fascinating and gripping. The overarching story of the trials of this character is tragic and heart wrenching, while the continued support and hospitality Emil finds among strangers, among "normal" folks and the superpowered alike, is a balm to the soul, peppered as it is by the continued hatred and discrimination Emil faces for being so gifted. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this series!
