Book Description

1 Jun 2011
A strong and growing intuition in society today is the idea that our thoughts create our own reality. Yet it seems obvious that, try as we might, our lives are not quite what we fantasize. Is the intuition thus wrong? Through a rational, methodic interpretation of meditative insights, the validity of which is substantiated with a compelling scientific literature review, the author constructs hypotheses that reconcile facts with intuition. Mesmerizing narratives of his expeditions into the unconscious suggest an amazing possibility: just as dreams are seemingly autonomous manifestations of our psyche, reality may be an externalized combination of the subconscious dreams of us all, mixed as they are projected onto the fabric of space-time. Perhaps the laws of physics are an emergent by-product of such synchronization of thoughts. Through computer simulations, the author explores the implications of these hypotheses, with conclusions uncannily reminiscent of observed phenomena.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 9 July 2012
By Jenny
Format:Paperback
I have recently read all three of Bernardo Kastrup's book and cannot recommend them highly enough.
I have read many books on consciousness (from both scientific and spiritual points of view) and rate these as possibly the best I have read.

I have a background in science and indeed a PhD in biology. I find Bernardo's model of reality to be spot on. His points are argued clearly and succintly and provide much hope for those of us who feel that there is more to this life than meets the eye.
A MUST read in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bypassing consciousness 15 Oct 2011
By M. L Lamendola - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author is very clear from the outset that this isn't one of those books that grossly misrepresents quantum physics by claiming it explains psychic forces. He does, however, draw on his quantitative background and analysis skills to examine his own journeys into the deep subconscious or deep meditative states. The journeys are experiments of his own design, and there are four of them.

An interesting aspect of this is he also uses computer simulations. In fact, the Appendix provides algorithms written in the code language Processing (based on Java).

He compares his visualizations and impressions with the known universe and the laws that govern it. The analysis is a bit deep, so the reader needs to pay careful attention while walking through it.

A particularly interesting idea he brings up is that we have knowledge that's outside our brains. This needs a bit of explanation. One theory is that everything we know is "downloaded" into our minds. That it is, we read it or hear it, or in some way get it from some source. Kastrup doesn't point out the fact that we can generate our own information, for example as Einstein did via thought experiments. But he does take us in another direction, that being we can connect to an outside source.

This idea isn't new. It's even been popularized in our culture, which becomes obvious shortly into any of the Star Wars films. One thing Kastrup adds is how to get into a mental state in which that information becomes accessible. How, for example, do you get around the mind's own filters?

Fractals figure heavily in this book, as do mandalas (especially Tibetan mandalas). If you're interested in mind exploration, this book would be a good addition to your library.

One thing I didn't like about the book is the small typeface. Going the next size up for any reprints would be a welcome improvement.

This book consists of 13 chapters in 162 pages, plus 17 pages of computer code, plus 10 pages of endnotes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scientist with Courage to Exercise Radical Empiricism of William James 5 July 2012
By Richard A. Stuart - Published on Amazon.com

"Dreamed Up Reality" is written by a coutageous interdisciplinary Scientist who is willing to "taste the pudding" himself by attempting to rationally explore his own subjective experience through meditation, his training as a PhD in Computer Science and Depth Psychology that points to a deeper level of Self and Meaning.

Kastrup work , his meticulously describ accounts of his own experience, his arguments are written and sourced to subjects that I have studied through my field of Psychology over the past 35 years. I have much more hope that I may live to see a paradigm change that will replace the current Epstomological framework of the way much of science is now practiced in private and academic settings. Meaning, wonder, enchantment and "challenging the status quo" have led to the great scientific revolutions.

This book, along with "Rational Spirituality" and "Meaning in Absurdity" are well written exmplars of the absolute necessity of bringing Meaning and Mystery back in to the rational eye of Science and perhaps spell the end of fundamentalist polemics that scream at each other from the edges of hardcore Materialist Science and superstitious, irrational religious fundamentalism.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Carries On Nicely from Rational Spirituality 2 July 2012
By Paul Garrigan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed Bernardo's first book enough to want to read more of his work. This book goes deeper into his ideas and he mentions some personal experiments that he conducted that led to his conclusions. I found chapter 12 to be a bit heavy for my taste because I'm not much of a fan of mathematics, but I'm sure his explanations there will be of value to somebody. Overall another good book and deserving of 5 stars.
