Product Description

In the tempestuous closing years of the twelfth century, the fourteen-year-old Oba Toshiko, daughter of a provincial warlord, enters the women’s quarters of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, her body bartered for favor at court. Toshiko’s talent as a singer of popular songs and her innocence excite the emperor’s lust and the dangerous jealousy of Lady Sanjo. An accidental and forbidden meeting with the noble physician Yamada Sadahira tempts Toshiko’s heart and tests her loyalty to her family. When her enemy strikes, she flees the palace to be with Sadahira.

Impeccably researched, I.J. Parker’s DREAM OF A SPRING NIGHT begins the saga of the Yamada family, of Toshiko and Sadahira, and of the enigmatic adopted son Hachiro. Their fate will play out against the violence and pageantry of the Heike Wars and the fall of the empire.

Excellent read 11 Jan 2012

Enjoyed this book greatly. Most interesting to learn a bit about life in an emperor's palace in Japan from the perspective a a young country girl. Having been told by her mother that whatever happened to her was simply her karma and must be accepted. Also to pray for the strength to forget herself and simply to serve future generations.
Such an isolated, lonely life in spite of her luxurious surroundings, Toshiko only has one friend among the other ladies of the court, until a chance meeting with the Doctor when he loses his way among the palace buildings.

A great start for a triology 13 Aug 2011
By Melinda J. Shoop - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Stepping away from the investigations of Sugawara Akitada, I.J.Parker goes forward in time to the 12th century and the reign of retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa and his court. Brought as a court lady-in-waiting to Kyoto, and bartered by her family for imperial favor, Oba Toshiko is only 14, but she captures the jaded Emperor's attention with her talents as a singer and dancer of imayo, romantic and sometimes suggestive folks songs. Go-Shirakawa's interest in these songs, and her innocent beauty, brings Toshiko face-to-face with him, and eventually to his bed.

But Toshiko's heart belongs to a secret love--the kind and handsome physician Yamada, whom she met by accident but has never forgotten. As Toshiko makes her way through the dangerous world of the palace women, circumstances align to test her courage and daring---and to make herself the life she wants.

I enjoyed this book, read from my Kindle download, and look forward to Parker's next part of this trilogy.

Fast paced enjoyable period mysteries 10 Nov 2011

I J Parker really has a way with the older historical Japanese settings. This trilogy is a wonderful venture into this era. If you like ancient Japan, you won't want to miss this. The central female protagonist, Toshiko, is likeable and strong. The plot takes surprising turns. It's a somewhat intimate story set against a backdrop of political turmoil. I highly recommend this series. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. I suggest you buy all 3 volumes at once because the first two are sort of cliff-hangers: the trilogy really is a single 3-volume novel.
