Product Description

* After his US R&B success with "Reach For It" (1977) and "Dukey Stick" (1978), DREAM ON was jazz'n'funk pioneer George Duke's eighth album for Epic Records.

* Released in 1982, DREAM ON was one of George's best selling albums for Epic, a US Top 20 R&B, Top 10 Jazz and Top 100 pop charted album. The single, `Shine On' was also George's fourth biggest R&B-charted single, a success on the dance music charts and George's second highest pop chart entry during his Epic years.
* The master keyboardist was the primary writer on most of the album's ten tracks with the exception of the title tune, co-penned by Felton Pilate of Con-Funk-Shun fame.
* DREAM ON's line-up includes Ndugu Chancler on drums, Byron Miller on bass and Michael Sembello on guitar. Renowned vocalists Jean Carn and Flora Purim are also featured on `Son Of Reach For It (Funky Dream),' a continuation of George's 1978 classic `Reach For It.' Key cuts on DREAM ON include the funky `Ride On Love,' another US R&B charted single and a remake of `Someday,' which George had recorded in 1975.

* DREAM ON is one of four George Duke classic jazz/funk albums being reissued by SoulMusic.com Records in 2011. This expanded edition includes US single edits of `Shine On' and `Ride On Love.'

Shine On Mr.Duke! 26 Sept. 2003
By Andre' S Grindle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
George Duke challanges the monster catchy, poppy, dancable funk of Earth,Wind & Fire here and aside from two redundant covers of "Reach for It" and "Someday" (neither of whitch are bad
either),tunes like the Chic-sh tital track,the synthesizer-heavy
"Framed",the dancable "Ride On Love","Shine On" and a superior
rare groove instrumental "Positive Energy" capture Duke at his
best and most memorable."Let Your Love Shine" is a great example
of Duke's ballad stylings-far superior to his other slower numbers in terms of sheer songcraft. The only trouble is that none
of "Dream On" will appeal to jazz fans;this marks Duke's full
conversion over to funk and R&B,one he would (thankfully) stick with for much of his career to follow.ENJOYYYYY!!!

Avoid this edition 17 Aug. 2014

Duke fans, by all means avoid these "remasters" and concentrate on laying hands on the Japanese mini-sleeve BS-2 remasters. These Soulmusic Records versions sound horrendous with their ridiculously bloated bass and other sonic injustices.
The Blu-Spec CDs are where it's at. Ordered direct from Japan they run about $20 and are worth every penny.

Jazz-funk with a touch of E-W-F funk 7 Dec. 2012
By Kenneth Crockett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is a funky hardcore funk release of George Duke. The funk is jazz-funk with a touch of E-W-F funk. That hasn't to this day been given any respect. This gives E-W-F; their respect and honor. Very rare is this funky release. Love this release; have the vinyl of it, too.I would say get it. As go for the Clarke/Duke projects, too.

Let Your Love Shine!!!!! 14 Aug. 2005
By Andre S. Grindle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I've already reviewed this album but since it is listed here again I'm going to review it again.'Dream On' is one of my favorite George Duke albums!Any of the early 80's stuff by The Brothers Johnson,Heatwave and Earth,Wind & Fire sound great alongside it.What always puzzles me is that you will probably find this CD in the music stores jazz bins.It is not a jazz album at all. What you will find here is highly catchy funky pop tunes and fantastic instrumentation on the part of all participating.Duke himself is in fine form-his burst of Clavitar (the odd keytar pictured on the album cover) on tunes like "Framed" will send you to another galaxy!

This album was a huge hit in Japan where Mr.Duke had and still has a huge following. In terms of pop music George Duke's writing and singing is WAY above the board on this album and many artists have released others of equal strengh.Problem comes in popularity and premotion.Duke was always premoted in jazz terms and alot jazz fans would think of an album like this was a big sellout to R&B and funk listeners, ironically both styles of music THAT GREW OUT OF JAZZ to begin with! But for the funkateers, pop fans and open minded jazz enthusiasts this album will prove a treat-it's not too softball or anything. If George Duke had been sold as an R&B artist at this point this album would've surely dented the R&B charts and I believe pop audiences would've listened up too because the material is strong enough and very radio friendly.
