Reviews

From the irreverent minds of Animal House, The Blues Brothers and Friends, comes the risky, riotous and racy smash-hit series, Dream On. Brian Benben stars as the newly divorced Martin Tupper book editor, father and fantasizer whose dysfunctional dating life is punctuated by moments of sinfully hilarious cinematic daydreams. With a quirky, headstrong secretary barking orders, an inquisitive teenage son, a womanising best friend and an ex who's never fully exited his life, Martin's way overdue for a crash-course on the opposite sex.

This is an excellent series that has a loyal cult following but deserves much more widespread popularity. It's one of the cleverest, funniest TV shows that I've seen. It chronicles the life of Martin Tupper, a divorced book editor who is still in love with his ex-wife. The plotlines and scripts on their own are outstanding, but the series is given an added unique edge by the ingenious intermingling of old black-and-white footage (representing Martin's internal thoughts, shaped by large amounts of TV that he watched as a child in the 50s) at opportune moments. If you haven't seen this series, it is highly recommended. These DVDs contain the uncensored, original HBO editions. I just hope that this UK release is a sign that the other 5 series are going to be issued in future.

I love this series, it's another of those that I used to catch odd episodes from during late night channel hopping.
It's got a great cast with Brian Benben playing the lead role of Martin Tupper and some great supporting performances by Denny Dillon as his over-bearing secretary Toby, Jeffrey Joseph as his best friend Eddie who fronts a seedy reality TV show and Wendie Malick as his ex-wife and a whole host of beautiful co-stars often in nude scenes. The writers and directors never lose sight of the fact it is a comedy show and all these nude scenes are relevant to the plots, honestly.
This first season sees Martin finally agreeing to a divorce as his ex wants to marry her new lover a brilliant surgeon who can also turn his hand to just about everything much to Martin's disgust, it takes a long time but eventually Mr.Perfect, who is never seen here, finally fails at something.
It's superby written and, most important for a comedy show, it is very funny. The clips they used are well edited in and shows it was made by people with a love for old films and TV series, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, who also had some success with a later comedy show you may have heard about called Friends.
Many thanks for finally putting this out on DVD, I now have series 2 on order.

The best comedy series from HBO in my opinion: funny, inventive (in its use of film clips), adult (raunchy, but not crude) and, in Brian Benben's portrayal of the hapless Martin Tupper, it's Woody Allen without the nerdishness that spoils some of the latter's films. Tupper's secretary (Toby) played by Denny Dillon with her abrasive, no-nonsense, NY down-to-earth approach is the perfect complement to the dreamy, idealism which is so much a part of Tupper's character.

So, when will we be able to sate our withdrawal symptoms and get our fix of Seasons 3 - 6? Come on HBO (or your new masters at Sky): there's a market in them there programmes and in the words of that great philosopher Englebert Humperdinck... "Please release them let them go..." The gratitude of myself and fellow 'Dreamers' will know no bounds.

One of the most original tv comedies in recent times, and it ages well, even with some of the 80s clothing and hair styles. It featured a clever mix of new and old film, using the old to comment on the new, as if in Martin Tuppers's mind, and always done with affection. I remember this show fondly, and so do others, as there is now a small queue of friends wanting to borrow and watch it. The later series were not even shown on UK tv so I look forward to seeing them later on. Next though, bring on Series 2, and one of my next Amazon orders.

This is a wonderful show, consistently entertaining and innovative. The two "gimmicks" that make it different from anything before or (alas) since, are the use of rapid cutaway to old tv clips, and a startlingly frank attitude towards sex. The clips are used to show the interior life of the hero, wonderfully played by Brian Benben, and the sexual frankness includes a healthy dose of nudity.
Alas series 3 to 5 have not yet been issued on DVD. A treat in store, I hope.

This series was one of the most original, creative and funniest things I have ever seen! I await the rest of the series with impatience!
The plot? a man swims upstream against circumstance, friends and lovers using clips from 1950's TV to rationalise and relate to his curent circumstance. Despite his weaknesses and failings you have to love Martin Tupper.

This was one of the most original sit coms ever made. It was based on the premise that a typical US child of the sixties will have spent most of his formative years stuck in front of a TV set. So those old programmes have had a powerful effect on the way he views the world. The hero, played by Brian Benben, is a divorced book editor with a complicated work and private life whose inner thoughts are revealed in flashbacks from old TV shows and B movies. They show that what he says is usually the opposite of what he thinks. The effect is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Remember watching this back in the day. Managed to pick up season two cheap after getting this. Hasn't dated too badly, except the fashion and the hair.
