Child star of radio and later film and televison actor, Tommy Sands was also launched as a threat to Elvis Presley during the mid-Fifties with his good looks ensuring he succeeded as a teenage heart-throb. Contracted to Capitol Records, Tommy's singles (TEEN-AGE CRUSH and OLD OAKEN BUCKET) did well enough but the label's preoccupation with Sinatra, Nat Cole, Peggy Lee and Dean Martin meant the young vocalist was expected to fulfil a similar album quota with included standards as mainstay and the satisfying outcome was WHEN I'M THINKING OF YOU (1958) and DREAM WITH ME (1959.
Now combined by Sepia Records, with both albums featuring Nelson Riddle as conductor/arranger, Tommy's easy-going vocals nicely balance HELLO YOUNG LOVERS, WHAT A DIFF'RENCE A DAY MADE, FOOLS RUSH IN and WHEN I FALL IN LOVE amongst well-interpreted ballads or easy swingers. Timing constraints (76.14) has necessitated the exclusion of MORE THAT YOU KNOW from the WHEN I'M THINKING OF YOU album with Sepia hoping to include on a future release.
Despite such excellence, it's a pity the young singer's recording career failed to advance further but Capitol had difficulty marketing Tommy's vocal talent and along the way romance, marriage and divorce from Sinatra's daughter, Nancy, overtook events. Collectors will appreciate the rarity value of these albums and this release is recommended to all who enjoy Fifties music with Sepia's usual standards providing excellent remastered sound plus informative notes and original album graphics within the booklet's presentation.
