Dream Girl was released in 1977 and starred Bollywood's darling Hema Malini in the title role.
Sapna (Malini) runs the Happy Home orphanage with her friend Chandru (Asrani). For some reason they don't get any legitimate funding so they run all sorts of scams to bring in money to keep the place running. She scams Anup (Dharmendra) once too many times and he blackmails her into pretending to be his princess girlfriend to get his grandfather (Ashok Kumar) off his back. Granddad wants grandson to get married as he's too much of a playboy and won't settle down. Anup had bought a portrait of a beautiful woman and fell in love with the woman in the portrait (which just happens to be Sapna) so he can't believe his luck when he finds her! Does it all turn out for the best? How will granddad react if and when he finds out that Sapna is a con artist and not a princess? What lengths will Anup's dastardly cousin go to to rob Anup of his inheritance?
Dream Girl is an easy to watch film although at over 2.5 hours you might find yourself wanting it to be over long before it actually is. Some of the scenes are dragged out too much and the action scenes are not done very well. Malini looks stunning throughout the film. Dharmendra's character is not really likeable and neither of the leads seem to have acted their best in the film. The kids at the orphanage are fairly cute but all in all I found this to be a very average film. Considering Dream Girl was one of Malini's most famous films I was expecting a lot more. Some of the songs are nice to listen to and pleasant to watch including the title song and it was fun to watch Duniya Ke Log as it's picturised at 1970a Disneyland.
