Barbirolli's well-known version of Gerontius, on EMI, with Lewis, Baker and Borg, has long been a favourite recording of this searing work - and with justification. This Rome 'live' performance from 1957 is quite astonishing for a variety of reasons. The first is Vickers, whose assumption of the role of Gerontius is truly awe-inspiring in its heroism and dedication - in ways that only Vickers can deliver. Shacklock is close to Baker in style and intensity and while Nowakowski may not be as idiomatic as some, he is perfectly acceptable. Yet another extraordinary feature of the performance is the understanding and commitment of the Rome orchestra and the wonderfully characterful Italian chorus, with their sonorous basses in particular - none of them can have been at all familiar with the score but you would never know. Barbirolli brings his characteristic generosity and sentiment to the reading and can clearly be heard joining in on a fairly regular and rather endearing number of occasions. The mono recorded sound is perfectly acceptable and it is a privilege to be able to hear this great performance. All Elgarians should have it
