'No matter what day it is...you can be sure it's the anniversary of something really horrible, utterly disgusting or just plain weird..'
With his usual wit, Mr Deary has created a diary with a difference - the difference being you can record your own piece of history alongside the 'Horrible History' entry!
On the left-hand page there is a diary entry of an historical event for every day (different years) and the right-hand side is blank for the reader to record their own diary data!
Opening, rather appropriately, with the entry for January 1st 1660 -
'Samuel Pepys begins his famous diary today......
......History can be absolutely horrible - from the gruesome gods of the Ancient Greeks to the suffering chimney sweeps of vile Victorian times. Misery, gloom, pain and hopelessness. (Rather like supporting my local football club.)
It's all there!
Not a day in history passes without some awful anniversary being reached.
So here are just a few of them - one for every day of the year - for you to remember. Quaint customs and dire deeds....miserable memories to brighten your day! That's right! I said brighten your day!
Look at it this way. Every day you can write something in your diary.
If it's been a 'good' day then you'll be happy remembering it.
But, when you have had a `bad' day, you can read the dreadful diary of history on the opposite page and say - `Wow! I thought I had had a bad day. It could have been worse....I could have been around on this day in history........
....puzzle your parents with your wisdom
When they say on a freezing cold night.....'Just run down to the shop for a loaf of bread and a tin of mushy snails,' or when they growl those dreaded words, 'TIDY YOUR ROOM', you can say:-
'Sorry, parents, but I am too upset. You see, today is the day that Mary, Queen of Scots died.'
By the time you've told the sad little story of poor Mary's head bouncing on the floor, your parents will probably have forgotten what they asked you to do.....
Read this diary and you'll see that history isn't such a bad subject after all.
History isn't really so grim, gruesome or grotty...but people can be.
Enjoy reading about them.
History has never been so horrible!'
