An excellent piece of urban comment. Sounds surprisingly fresh and is still a valid statement about inner-city life. Superb!

5.0 out of 5 stars Linton Kwesi Johnson at his best 16 July 2005
By Gareth Smyth VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great record from the 70s - highlights being the protest songs for George Lindo and Darcus Howe. The anger is always tempered by the poetry, the intelligence and the infectious dance beats. Sounds as good now as it did then.

5.0 out of 5 stars The green, green grass of home 3 Oct 2004
Format:Audio CD
I would like to state the case for this being the best English album ever made. Screw the Kinks, Blur, Pistols - this is what being English is all about.
Listen here to recall the racial tension, concrete, Police victimisation, oppression, solidarity and the futile attempts to escape of the late 70's. No fun.
I shan't bore you with all the details, but the band are tight, Lynton is at his thundering best and the songs are magnificent; particularly on '5 Nights of bleeding'.
Anyway, for me it is a reminder of driving around West Wales in my dad's bright orange hippy van, aged 6, wondering what the funny man was singing about - concrete, racism and violence being in short supply back there then.
If you are only going to buy one CD this month, buy this one.
