I'm sure this is a very good router, but do note that it is not dual band as described above. It supports 2.4Ghz only. This applies to the "n" and "Vn" models. The models with a "plus" suffix are dual band.

I've informed Amazon of this, but at the time of writing, they haven't changed their description. I don't like the principle of rating products I haven't used (I returned mine without opening the box) but it's the only means of notifying people of the error.

On paper, this router ticks all the boxes. Configuration is daunting. Given the endless feature list, I don't mind this. How anyone would expect such a complex piece of kit to be easy to setup beats me. If you want "easy", buy something else.

It is pointless to comment on wireless coverage. Success or failure so much depends on the attributes of your building and the siting of the box within it. It works well here.

You can have up to 4 SSIDs and up to 4 LANs. In theory, this should take care of kids and guests. Alas, whilst the box will allow you take the WLAN down during programmable hours, it does not allow you to take down individual SSIDs. Also, you cannot configure different DNS servers for different LANs (my preferred route for safe-guarding my children. The parental controls of the box are a little intrusive for my liking. They are based on users identifying themselves to the router by name+password. There seems to be no option to base user profiles on host names, for example, which are readily known to the router). And while the DDNS update service covers a reasonable number of providers, OpenDNS is sadly missing - perhaps because this would divert customers away from Draytek's own payable Web Content Filter service.

The physical layout is a little odd perhaps. The antenna are on the opposite side to the LAN ports. That is, the box really wants to stand upright. Ok if you have a wall to mount it to / lean it against. Mind, if you do so, you won't be able to read the LEDs...

I wanted to attach a drive enclosure to the USB port so that the Vigor may replace my ridiculously complicated NAS. Alas, this has not been a success to date. The documentation for the feature is hopeless - be sure to read the FAQs on their web site.

This is indeed the don of all home and SMB routers.

I bought this to replace another router, mainly because I wanted to be able to:

1. Restrict access to a window of time for certain devices
2. Control bandwidth so that certain devices don't get to grab all of the internet.

You can do this and more with this Router. It is necessarily complex to set up though, so it is perhaps not for the faint hearted, but general out of the box set up is easy enough. There is also help out there on the internet for just about anything you need to do with this router.

In my setup, the router is under a cupboard under the stairs. It's inside a metal networking cabinet. And yet wireless is available as far as the second floor of my house.

I've had the 2830 for a year or so, to replace a 2820 that "bricked".

It was great, at first- got up to 6Mb/s on our line (about 1m from the exchange).

There are some great features with this router:
1) Can support Multi-NAT; I have an 8-IP block of static IPs, and different services are open on different IP addresses.
2) Can support up to 4 SSIDs, so one for work, one for home, one for guests and one for gaming.
3) Very sophisticated firewall, port-mapping, MAC-binding etc, and even the ability to up and down different services based on a schedule.

However- the last few months, it's had an increasing incidence of "bad days", where the speed drops off (down to 0.3Mb at times today), wireless connections are randomly dropped, and eventually it freezes up.

If you don't need the features of this, don't buy it- get a Billion instead.

Boringly, I bought this for work. We're using a pair of these in BT fibre equipped depots to create a VPN to access the accounts software.

Previously we used a pair of Sohoblue Netpilots in conjunction with a couple of different routers to establish the VPN and provide virus and malware filtering but the whole thing was a horrible mess and never worked correctly. We've offloaded the malware protection to the server/workstations and the Vigors are acting as single point routers at both ends (they uplink to Cisco 48 port Gigabit switches).

The interface isn't pretty, like you get in most domestic routers these days, but it's gotten the job done and has been rock solid. We're not even using the wireless, but when I tested it, it was fine - the signal soon trails off in a warehouse full of steel racking and concrete walls but that's to be expected.

There's no way you need anything like this for your home network but frankly after the hassles we've had this past six months, I would happily kiss this little white box.

Excellent. 5 out of 5.

The first unit I bought was defective, all options for Wi-Fi were absent in the configuration menus.
The returns process was handled in reasonable time and I ended up spending extra on a 2830N+ else where. The replacement is giving a stronger Wi-Fi signal than the high end £100-£120 Netgear I had before but it still fails to maintain full signal strength down the 3 floors of our house even though I have adjusted the Wi-Fi aerials to spread the signal in the right direction.
The configuration options are very comprehensive though I would say the "automatic" set up process was not as automatic the the previous Netgear which may put off less technical people. The user guide provides enough detail to complete the set up provided you know or can obtain technical details like Primary and Secondary DNS server addresses from your internet service provider.
In fairness this is aimed at small and medium sized businesses who are likely to have IT technical support people around to set it up.
