Product Description

The DrayTek Vigor AP-700 is a standalone wireless access point, ideal for adding wireless connectivity to an existing LAN, or for expanding the range of an existing wireless LAN by using the WDS features. As an access point, the Vigor AP-700 connects to your existing ethernet switch and wireless users (with laptops or other WiFi evices) can then connect to your LAN. You can restrict access to specific devices by locking in their hardware 'MAC address' and if you have a radius server, user access can be further limited requiring unique login using 802.1x authentication (MD5/PEAP mode).

This is fully 802.1af compliant, so compatible with any PoE switch or injector. The AP-700 can use an external radius server to hold user credentials but also has its own built-in radius server to store up to 96 users. The AP-700's built-in Radius server can also act as a server to additional devices.

I bought the Draytek Access Point as a client for my existing wireless network so that I could add wireless connectivity to wired components.

Setting up proved to be swift and easy. I did not actually read the instructions because it just worked as soon as I connected it to my router using a LAN cable (not supplied). The default network address is 192.168.1.2, which was compatible with my network setup, and the interface is simple to follow if you understand what you are trying to do. I did not look at the CD which came with the unit.

I would add that this product appears similar to the Edimax EW-7416APN, which I also own. Although the physical units appear different, the interfaces are all but identical except for the branding and the default IP address which is 192.168.2.1 on the Edimax. The Edimax is nearly half the price so next time round I would be more likely to get the cheaper product, although for me setup would require a bit more work as the IP settings will need to be changed at some stage to work on my network (but not necessarily on someone else's).

The Draytek is currently working faultlessly (as is the Edimax).

Draytek used to be a fantastic business grade brand of products.

The AP-700 highlights how things have started to go downhill though.

When it works it is a great little access point. When it doesn't it is a nightmare to put right.

Pros:
Great range
Very compact size
Lots of configurable options

Cons:
Complicated user system
Not easy to setup
Very hard to access the system if you are not already using it's default IP address block
Not for the non-technical

This access point should only be purchased by those who are IT savvy or those who are prepared to put in the time and effort of figuring it out.
For everyone else, you would be much better served by using a much more user-friendly brand like Belkin or Netgear.

A good feature set in a sadly underpopulated area of the market, but as you can imagine a lot of corners have been cut to get there both in terms of the features themselves and build quality.

Unfortunately, in the case of the two I have worked with, the DHCP stopped responding at least once a day. Not resolved up to and including the latest firmware. If you're providing it from your router or server this is obviously irrelevant (and would be recommended anyway given the lack of information it provides about clients for example).

Great product. Easy to setup - just plug and play really. Had various devices connected to it within a matter of minutes.
