E H Shepard talks about his childhood in a whimsical and charming manner.
He tells us what it was like growing up in an age of domestic servants, maiden aunts, horse-drawn cabs, gas lamplighters, and policemen armed with truncheons. We hear about his childhood illness of scarletina, and having to be quarantined with it. And of course, the illustrations are delightful. He showed his artistic talent from a very early age and luckily his father kept all of his childhood drawings in a trunk. The sketches that he did when he was just 7 years old are amazing, and are used to illustrate this fascinating book.
