Product Description

Product Description

This classic of art instruction is the work of James Duffield Harding (1798-1863), who served as drawing master and sketching companion to the great Victorian art critic, John Ruskin. Generations of students have benefited from the teachings of this 19th-century master, who sought always to "produce as near a likeness to Nature, in every respect, as the instrument, or material employed, will admit of; not so much by bona fide imitation, as by reviving in the mind those ideas which are awakened by a contemplation of Nature . . . The renewal of those feelings constitutes the true purpose of Art."
This volume consists of direct reproductions of Harding's sketches of vignettes from natural settings. Each is accompanied by a series of lessons emphasizing both practical and theoretical considerations. The edition features the added attraction of 23 outstanding plates from the author's Lessons on Trees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drawing 11 May 2010
This is a great example of JDHs skills; the man was a fantastic artist and this little book shows off some of that ability. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Root and branch quality(sorry!) 5 Sep 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Top quality illustrations (they really are top quality, lithographs) throughout with some very thorough instruction which has added value in that it's not exclusively on drawing trees.

This is definitely in the "traditional drawing" category, none of this modern mumbo jumbo and as such it is a superb grounding on drawing nature. Fantastic if you draw or paint relaistic landscapes or, just trees (like me).

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning from a MASTER! 19 Feb 2008
By Shay - Published on
I have been a professional artist for decades doing a wide variety of work in graphics, painting, and in the television and motion picture art departments....but as we all know, there is always something new to learn. This book, if one looks closely enough at the creation of the works, and even if one simply enjoys looking at the whole picture, is so inspiring! The "great ones" in ANY field, the arts, sports, etc., all know it's still all about the basics at all stages of your career, and a lot can be learned from the "basics" in this book's work. Even my paintings have been enormously improved by the study of values in these drawings, and the way he moves the eye back drawing the viewer in to participate in the composition by pulling you through 3-4 stages of foreground, middle ground, background...and he makes it look so simple. And his description of his period materials is fascinating. It's not for the first time artist, but all can learn a lot if they look close enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Treasure for Drawing 12 July 2006
By Woodie - Published on
It is quite amazing how much art has changed but remains the same. This is quite a treasure on style and technique for a serious student of art. If you've ever found yourself scratching your head at how nature should look in a drawing, this book is a terrific reference. Because it was written so very long ago, the language is charming, but difficult to follow at times. For this reason, I took one star away. But with careful consideration, you will learn a whole lot from this "manual" on the Victorian style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info 4 Sep 2008
By Brad Teare - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This inexpensive title is full of great information about a wide variety of European trees. If you need to break out of a rut in your depiction of trees this book will probably do the trick. I give it four stars because of the overly verbose writing typical of the victorian age (the book was published in 1846). It is illustrated with vintage black and white drawings.
5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book! 18 May 2014

I love drawing and painting. I live in the woods and have been doing paintings and drawings of the beautiful trees around me. I wanted to see how other artists draw trees and get some good ideas and tips for my own drawings. This is my favorite tree drawing book. There are so many different types of trees to look at and learn about. This book is perfect for getting new ideas and for inspiring me.

J.D. Harding was one of John Ruskin's drawing masters, and the advice he imparts in this volume is priceless. In the age of brief text messages and tweets, some readers may be put off by his ornate Victorian writing style. Don't despair! Untangling the thicket of words is worth the effort if you are a lover of representational drawing. I have been a professor of drawing at the university level for nearly a quarter of a century and this is one of the best drawings manuals I have ever come across. Be warned, however; this is NOT a volume of facile tricks and techniques to help you make pretty pictures. This is serious advice for those who want to learn to SEE with a pencil in their hand.
